A 3-year-old horse from Gloucester County was euthanized on 20 Oct

2011 after contracting eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), a serious,

mosquito-borne illness in horses.

"With an increase in the state's mosquito population due to rain

storms in the last couple of months, horse owners must be vigilant in

protecting their animals from diseases spread by mosquitoes," said New

Jersey secretary of agriculture Douglas H Fisher. "Horse owners should

contact their veterinarians to have their animals vaccinated against

these illnesses."

This deadly disease is easily prevented by vaccination. Effective

equine vaccines for EEE and another mosquito-borne disease, West Nile

virus (WNV), are available commercially. Horse owners should contact

their veterinarians if their horses are not already up-to-date on

their vaccinations against both EEE and West Nile virus.

The Gloucester County stallion's vaccination status against EEE is

unknown with no report of vaccination in 2011.

EEE causes inflammation of the brain tissue and has a significantly

higher risk of death in horses than West Nile virus infection. West

Nile virus is a viral disease that affects horses' neurological

systems. The disease is transmitted by mosquito bite. The virus cycles

between birds and mosquitoes with horses and humans being incidental

hosts. EEE infections in horses are not a significant risk factor for

human infection because horses (like humans) are considered to be

"dead-end" hosts for the virus.

Earlier this month [October 2011], the 1st case of West Nile virus in

a horse was reported in Monmouth County. The 11-year-old mare was

treated for the disease.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reports that the

exceedingly high levels of precipitation experienced statewide due to

Hurricane Irene and subsequent rainstorms resulted in much higher than

normal mosquito populations. They said the immense amount of

floodwater throughout the state created habitat for those species of

mosquitoes which utilize semi-permanent, standing water for larval

development.

In 2010, New Jersey had 1 case of EEE and 2 cases of equine WNV. All 3

animals were euthanized. [It is also likely all 3 animals were

deficient in their vaccination status. - Mod.TG]

[The east coast has had a lot of water which is perfect for the

breeding of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the carrier of this viral

disease. Vaccinations are cheap and easy compared to the agony of

enduring the loss of your pet. Especially with such things as

Hurricane Irene this year (2011) it is difficult to imagine why owners

have not already vaccinated.

French EVA outbreak stabilizing

A stallion, several mares, and a foal have tested positive for equine

viral arteritis (EVA) at 2 French Lusitano farms in a new outbreak of

a disease not seen in France since 2007 [but see commentary below],

according to a European equine pathology surveillance network. The

mares suffered fertility issues, including abortion, and the foal

died.

"To our knowledge, several problems of reproduction were reported in

the breeding center where the foal died: embryonic reabsorption, low

fertility, and infertility," said Christel Marcillaud Pitel, director

of the Reseau d'Epidemio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine [equine

pathology surveillance network] in Caen, France. "There was only one

case of an abortion causing an expulsed fetus, and the fetus was born

alive but very weak and it died within 48 hours."

The outbreak occurred in 2 neighboring farms in southeast France near

Marseille [Bouches-du-Rhone department] and Montpellier [Herault

department]. The outbreak appears to be limited to a Lusitano breeding

program in the area, Marcillaud Pitel said. The affected stallion's

semen was not shipped for artificial insemination because he only

provides live cover, she added.

Analyses revealed that both farms were affected by the same strain of

the virus, but the origin of the outbreak is unknown. The 2 farms have

been quarantined since the 1st case was detected in late June [2011].

Any horses that left the sites prior to the quarantine have been

tested for EVA. Results are pending, but the situation appears to be

stabilizing, Marcillaud Pitel said.

The last EVA outbreak in France [see commentary below] began in July

2007 and affected 26 farms in Normandy, including the French national

stud at Haras du Pin.

"For the moment (the current outbreak) is of a weaker amplitude

because it's localized in just these 2 sites," Marcillaud Pitel said.

"The virus also seems less virulent (than the one in 2007): the

symptoms are less remarkable, and it is less widespread among the

individuals."

The disease, which is caused by the equine arteritis virus, can cause

fever, edema, and abortion and is mainly transmitted through semen.

Affected horses can carry the virus for life after the acute stages of

the illness have passed. During the acute stage the virus can also be

transmitted via respiratory secretions.

[EVA has been annually reported to the OIE by France as present since

at least 1996. During 2010, 11 outbreaks were recorded from the

departments of Lot (2 outbreaks), Manche (1), Orne (1), Ardennes (1),

Bouches-du-Rhone (1), Calvados (1), and Correze (3). It will be

helpful to note if these records were related to clinical or

asymptomatic cases. The information by The Horse above, according to

which EVA is a "disease not seen in France since 2007", deserves

clarification. It will also be interesting to note if the introduction

of the agent may be attributed to national/international movements of

horses.

The San Bernabe auction is a source of violence that has permeated not only

other animal auctions of the State of Mexico but also most of the MexicanRepublic.

It is the largest animal auction in Mexico. It is the central dissemination point of

sale for slaughter animals.

■TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Since October of 2007 and through multiple witness reports, television and

newspaper headlines, animal protection groups of Mexico have been alerting

the Mexican community of the terrible animal abuse and extremely poor

sanitary conditions at the San Bernabe animal auction in Mexico (Mercado de

San Bernabe). The San Bernabe auction is located in the Almoloya de Juarez

municipality, about 100 kilometers west of Mexico City. Here, an environment

of violence and impunity persists before the eyes of the Governor of the

State of Mexico, *Enrique Peña Nieto*. The local authorities with

jurisdiction over the auction, in spite of having full power to inspect

operations, enforce humane regulations, and impose sanctions on the numerous

extreme violations have thus far been totally apathetic. Regulations aimed

at providing a somewhat sane level of humane animal treatment and sanction

the extreme brutality currently exist but have never been enforced.Therefore,

in effect, extreme animal cruelty persists unchecked without reprieve or recourse

at the San Bernabe auction.

Domestic animals as well as wildlife are sold every Monday at the auction

with the majority of domestic animals being horses and donkeys. Many animals

are of unclear origin and visibly sick, although suspected starting point

for most are states in central and northern Mexico, with some horses

traveling from locations as far north as the United States. They travel

thousands of miles to the San Bernabe auction to either be sold for various

domestic uses as live animals or butchered in clandestine slaughterhouses

throughout Mexico for their meat. It is possible that some of these horses

are ultimately sold to state slaughterhouses in Zacatecas and Aguascalientes

where they are processed and their meat is exported to markets overseas.

Horses and donkeys arrive at the auction in appalling condition.* *Those

that arrive alive are sadistically dragged out of the trucks despite

exposed fractures, bleeding open wounds and sores observed on

some of them. Horses are often suspended with ropes along truck

walls as they are too weak to remain standing. These so-called

"disposable animals" are kept alive because the price of a kilo of living meat is

$20.00 pesos, or about $2 USD, which is almost twice the price for a kilo of dead

meat. When the agony finally ends and an animal dies, it is immediately cut open

and its viscera is thrown to the ground where it remains without prompt subsequent

removal. Even more alarming is the disposal of animal entrails and blood in the

nearby Lerma River which creates a* *serious environmental and health threat.

The beatings, kicking, and use of electric cattle prods on the animals at

the auction are constant. Terrified and panicking donkeys and mules

regularly beaten to death.

We believe that it is mandatory to comply with Mexican federal and state

legislation regarding animal health and humane treatment, wildlife and

environmental preservation issues. An animal auction like San Bernabe with

no adequate health standards and with such pervading intense brutality must

be regularly inspected and adequate sanctions imposed without excuses to

overlook these severe violations.

The Governor of the State of Mexico, *Enrique Peña Nieto*, in coordination

with the City Council of Almoloya de Juarez and all other regulatory

entities with jurisdiction over the San Bernabe auction must assert their

authority and, for the sake of the physical and mental health of the

community, enforce the Federal Law of Animal Health; General Law of Wild

Animals; Law for the Environmental Balance; Biodiversity Code of the State

of Mexico; and the Mexican official regulations concerning the sale,

transport and handling of working and slaughter animals. They must also

sanction the numerous blatant violations occurring at the auction.

State and municipal governments are fully responsible for enforcing existing

regulations. For example, the Biodiversity Code of the State of Mexico,

stipulates the obligation of the municipalities, the Ministry of Health and

the State Environmental Ministry to immediately ensure proper care of the

animals and shut down animal auctions where cruelty or abuse take place, and

the life or safety of animals is at risk. Concerned Mexican citizens have

repeatedly asked Governor *Enrique Peña Nieto* for the enforcement of

existing laws as well as the implementation of a strong animal rights and

welfare educational campaign among the San Bernabe animal auction traders

and animal owners. Unfortunately, the Governor has thus far ignored all

urgent requests and pleas by citizens mainly because animal cruelty,

politically speaking, is not an important matter on his agenda.

The San Bernabe auction is a source of violence that has permeated not only

other animal auctions of the State of Mexico but also most of the Mexican

Republic. It is the largest animal auction in Mexico. It is the central

dissemination point of sale for slaughter animals.* *Here a Dantean scenario

of cruelty and filth rules undeterred where existing laws are not enforced

and supervision of auction operations, animal treatment or sanitary practices,

is nonexistent. The San Bernabe auction in Almoloya de Juarez makes

a mockery of humanity and is one of the most shameful examples of

animal brutality and ill health in Mexico. We have fought alone for a long

time and are now reaching out to the international community to please help us

make a change for San Barnabe’s animals. Their suffering is immense.

I am hoping you may be able to help me. Due to a really bad, and steadily getting worse financial situation we need to place our two retirees. They are both 28, one is ex-track brood-mare (so we are looking at thoroughbred sanctuary's) the other is a gelding, apendix with Cushings. He is fine on pergolide and has a lot of life left in him. Ideally we would like to keep them together as they are very devoted to each other. They are both really sweet and loving.

Anti-rodeo Senate Bill 613 declared dead

(SALEM, OREGON)-The Oregon Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources announced today it has nixed a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, February 24 on Senate Bill 613. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)-backed initiative was aimed at wiping out Oregon's thriving rodeo tradition by banning the roping of livestock. Legislative leaders said the measure also lacked support in the Oregon House of Representatives, and lawmakers will not address SB 613 again this session.

The so-called "horse tripping" bill would have outlawed the archaic practice of roping horses by the legs, causing them to crash violently to the ground. "Tripping" of horses was voluntarily banned by the Charro Rodeo Association in 1995. Some Oregon rodeos, such as the historic Jordan Valley Big Loop Rodeo, still include horse roping among the event lineup. However, strict rules safeguard the horses' welfare, disqualifying contestants who mistreat a horse or cause it to fall.

"No rodeo event in Oregon condones, or conducts, horse tripping. Oregon has comprehensive laws in place to protect animals. This bill was totally unnecessary. It was nothing more than a first step by HSUS to ban all roping of all animals in our state," Dave Duquette, United Horsemen CEO and President, said.
"Horses are livestock, and if this bill had become law, it would have set the precedent for making it illegal to rope a cow. After all, they're both livestock - what's the difference between horses' legs and cows' legs?" he added.

United Horsemen members called, wrote and e-mailed their Oregon Senators to let them know the truth about the misleading bill. They were joined by other SB 613 opponents, including the American Quarter Horse Association, the Oregon Quarter Horse Association, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys' Association, the Pendleton Round-Up and many other rodeo directors, supporters and horsemen from around Oregon and the Northwest.

Duquette emphasized the need to remain vigilant against other HSUS-backed legislation. "The HSUS goal is to gradually pick away at owners' rights to decide what is best for our horses and livestock," Duquette said. "They hide their agenda behind pretty language about protecting animals. But we are finally starting to educate the public about what is behind the curtain. Oregonians are too smart to fall for the misleading HSUS rhetoric. Those of us who love horses, livestock and the Western lifestyle need to work together to preserve our heritage and the right to decide what is best for our animals."

An excerpt from an email circulated by HSUS' Oregon Director, Scott Beckstead, in response to the news that SB 613 had been killed:
"We will continue to carefully monitor both the Big Loop rodeos in eastern Oregon, as well as the clandestine charro rodeos in other areas... Rest assured this bill will be sponsored again in the next session, and we will not stop trying until we finally get the law passed..."

Oregonians, we need your help!

Please contact your state Senator and explain why they should DEFEAT SB 613, the so-called "horse tripping" bill.

This is an assault by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) against all rodeo and equine sport.

HSUS claims that "horse tripping" is a cruel and commonplace practice.

Here is the truth: "horse tripping" is non-existent in Oregon! This is the usual HSUS tactic - lying and misinformation. What they really want to do with this bill is take the first step toward banning all rodeo and equine sport.

Points to be made in opposition of SB 613

1. The Charro Rodeo Association banned "horse tripping" voluntarily in 1995

2. Rodeos like the Jordan Valley Big Loop in Oregon have rules to protect the horses' welfare. Contestants are disqualified if a horse is "tripped."

3. HSUS has passed this law in 10 states, most of which have never had a Charro Rodeo. This proves their disingenuous motives.

4. We already have animal cruelty laws, and SB 613 would dilute those existing laws.

5. There is no form of "horse tripping" in Oregon. There is nothing to ban! The only purpose of this bill is to set a precedent for HSUS in their effort to ban all rodeo and equine sports.

6. This bill would create a financial hardship for rural communities that rely on rodeo events to bring in tourism dollars.

7. This would open the door for HSUS to wipe out other rodeo events like steerroping, team roping and calf roping next.

8. Rodeo supporters in Oregon and around the country should pay close attention to this and strike hard against it.

A manufacturer has issued a voluntary recall of horse feed that was distributed in California, Nevada and Oregon because it may contain a medication that can be fatal to horses if fed at high levels.

Missouri-based MANNA PRO PRODUCTS announced Friday it is voluntarily recalling FAMILY FARM COMPLETE HORSE 10 HORSE FEED, LOT NUMBER 1006 because it may contain potentially harmful levels of the medication MONENSIN SODIUM, or RUMENSIN.

The feed was distributed January 11 through January 21 to retailers in these three states. No illnesses or deaths have been reported and retailers have removed it from their stores, but the company says customers who purchased the product should STOP FEEDING IT IMMEDIATELY.

In response to the Horse Summit organized by horse breeders and supporters of new horse slaughter plants in America, Horse protection Organizations will come together in Las Vegas as well, on Jan 4th and Jan 5th.

It is bad and getting worse, says Simone Netherlands, a natural horse man ship trainer from Arizona, and founder of Respect4Horses Organization. She will be speaking at the horse protection organization’s Press conference at 11.30 am on Tuesday Jan 4th, at the conference room in the Enterprise Library in Las Vegas.

Respect4Horses and over 20 other animal rights and horse protection organizations contend that the slaughter of horses for human consumption is not only a brutal and barbaric practice, but also a practice that would endanger people’s health and well being, because of the drugs that are commonly used in horses, such as phynylbutazone (bute) and dewormers, which the European Union has found to be carcinogenic to the human body. The drugs can cause cancer, Alzheimer, liver disease and birth defects.

Currently, in spite of the new European Union rules, over ten thousand American horses per month, (according to the USDA) are still crossing our borders to be slaughtered by stabbing and shotgun methods, in Mexico and Canada.

The ban on horse slaughter H.R. 503 and S.727, would have made the export of horses for the purpose of slaughter for human consumption illegal. The bill in the 110th congress had 167 co-sponsors in the house and 28 co-sponsors in the senate but was never voted upon.

Horse advocate groups agree with the pro-slaughter organizations that we have an overpopulation problem of horses, but say that the problem is caused by over breeding, not by the closure of horse slaughter plants in America, as the numbers of horses slaughtered haven’t changed and are determined by the demand for horse meat abroad.

Why do breeders continue to breed even while the horse market is so over saturated? Asks Simone Netherlands. “Just like the housing industry over saturated itself and collapsed, the horse breeding industry is self destructing and bringing down horse values, and horse slaughter is their bail out.”

Simone Netherlands further states: We are distraught that over 30 million dollars in breed incentives will again be distributed to breeders of race horses and quarter horses this year, which further encourages irresponsible lottery breeding practices.

Respect4Horses proposes to turn at least parts of these funds into gelding funds, humane euthanasia funds and funds for horse rescues, as apposed to breeding incentives.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates it has nearly 12,000 more wild horses on its lands than the range can support, however at the same time the BLM is leasing grazing permits to allow over 3 million cattle to graze on these same lands. BLM representatives will also be attending the Summit of the horse. There are currently more wild horses in holding facilities than there are left in the wild.

Respect4Horses states that the overpopulation of wild horses is a myth and that there are currently only 25,000 wild horses left who are in fact in danger of extinction if the BLM does not stop their aggressive roundup schedule for the coming years. Reports from horse advocates claim that as soon as 2 years from now, America will not have any genetically viable and untouched wild horse herds left.

We do not want our tax dollars spent on these expensive, inhumane and completely unnecessary roundups of our national treasures, states the founder of Respect4horses, and to even think of slaughtering them is simply unacceptable.

Respect4Horses press conference will take place at the Enterprise Library at 11.30 am, Las Vegas, Tuesday Jan 4th. Media kits and lunch will be provided to reporters.

J.D. Alexander, a cattleman from Pilger, Nebraska, owns Alexander Cattle & Farms, a 2,000 acre corn/soybean/alfalfa farm that markets approximately 15,000 head of cattle per year. Alexander is a 1975 graduate of South Dakota State University with a B.S. in Agricultural Economics. While at SDSU, he was a member of the Jackrabbit football team from 1971 to 1974, and served as Captain in 1974. Between 1975 and 1984, Alexander held two positions with FMC Corporation Ag Chemicals Division: he was a Sales Representative in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska from 1975 to 1980, and he was a Sales Manager in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana from 1980 to 1984.

The 1990's was a busy decade for Alexander. He participated in NCA's Young Cattlemen's Conference in 1991; served on the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board from 1992 to 1998; served on the Domestic Marketing Subcommittee from 1993 to 1994; was Administrative Subcommittee Vice Chairman in 1995 and Administrative Subcommittee Chairman from 1996 to 1998. He also served on the Executive Committee from 1996 to 1998, as well as the Joint Beef Industry Nominating Committee in 1998.

Alexander served as President of the Nebraska Cattlemen in 2001, and was a member of the National Beef Industry Planning Group from 2000 to 2001. In addition, he has participated in several foreign trade missions, as well as foreign study travel seminars in Belgium, East and West Germany, Russia and Poland with the Nebraska LEAD program. He is Past President of the Wisner-Pilger Community Schools Foundation, Past Executive Board member of the Nebraska Cattlemen Board of Directors, and has served on numerous NCBA Committees as well. He is currently serving as NCBA Vice-President and he serves on the Nebraska Beef Council. In addition, he serves as Bank Director for both Midwest Banks in Pierce, Nebraska and United Republic Bank in Omaha. In 2001 J.D. was elected to the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement.

Alexander and his wife, Debra, have two children: Joshua and Kesa. Like their parents, they are both graduates of South Dakota State University. Joshua and his family recently returned to Nebraska to be part of the cattle operation. Kesa resides in Omaha.

Missing Mules

Browsing around the web today I came across an interesting post on NEERS site,....looking at a message from a gal named Tamara that placed a mule named Danny with us a few years ago. Apparently Tamara has turned to NEER for help in finding Danny, since we adopted him out under contact with one other mule named Honey, and the adoptor broke contract, moved away and we lost track of the mules. This info has been up on our QARR website ever since that time, and we have personally spoken with Tamara about the situation and, by the way, HAVE NEVER given her bad info with regards to our contact info. Our address and telephone number, which she has ALWAYS had, has NEVER changed;

MULES MISSING

Last year we adopted out two mules to a couple from HARTFORD, NY, who
called themselves "LONG-EARRED EXPRESS". The two individuals are
named GERTRUDE "Gerty" PANCUSHEK (aka Karen?) and her partner,
STEVEN WOODELL. They adopted the two mules under written contract
and we have just recently found out that THEY SOLD THEM! All attempts to
reach them have failed. We are in the process of commencing a case against them
in the Hartford, NY small claims court, - but will have to FIND them first! .

ANYONE knowing or having information about the whereabouts of these PEOPLE
or the MULES , please contact us. .

Below are some pics of the two mules. "Honey" the mule's name was changed to "Jolene." Honey is a chestnut molly mule (said to possibly be a "hinny.") approximately 8yrs old and stands about 14.2. Honey has a few 'white-hair" scars around the pressure areas where she was used in harness. I believe you can see one in the pic, on her right rear flank. She also has one on the left at the base of her neck. The other mule is a smaller buckskin "quarter-type" pony-mule, a gelding, approx 12HH......his name was Danny, approximately 12 yrs old. . He had "bad feet" in front (pidgon-toed) and a cancerous (?) mole on his rump, both were supposed to have been corrected by the adoptees, but we doubt this was done..

PLEASE if you know anything we would greatly appreciate your sharing,...we

UPDATE: We have finally been notified that Blaze is deceased. ):

NEER sent an older horse named Blaze, pulled from Camelot (with funds
raised mostly by the Friends of Barbaro) to Ed Batista (AnCarm Farm
in New Ipswich NH), with Julie LeDonne/Jewel's Farm, of West Newbury
MA as his barn help. At the time NEER was boarding a horse with Julie,
and trusted her to oversee Blaze. After a falling out with Julie (and
therefore Ed), communication became very sketchy, and we have
been unable to get any info on Blaze for over a year. Additionally
Blaze's former (and legal) owner who was horrified that Blaze ended
up at Camelot, was unable to get any info. Unfortunately, everybody
was friends back then, no written contract...lesson learned. So we have
no legal claim, but we do have proof of the 'transaction'. We did have a
connection to the farm for a while, but it has since been severed by a
bad check. We have made at least 2 calls to the NHSPCA to try to find
Blaze, as well as other sources to possibly check up on him.
We would just like to know that Blaze is ok and being taken care of.

In regards to the upcoming Summit, received in my in-box today;

Hi, CJ. I hope you are doing well.

You do realize that by attending, they are giving Wallis money to further their cause? They do not want to hear the truth that will prove they are wrong or they would have invited someone from the equine advocacy groups or scientific community to speak. They do not want to hear the studies that prove there is no correlation between neglect and slaughter. They do not want to hear the truth that US horses are not safe for human consumption. The people attending are the cause of horses going to slaughter. We do have a few people attending but even if they are allowed to ask questions or make comments, they will not be heard. You already know what the outcome of the meeting will be. It will be nothing we haven’t heard over the past many years. Why would you want to raise the attendance numbers and give credence to the meeting? It is a bunch of horse haters that profit from horse slaughter and nothing will change their minds. They are a very small voice of the $39B horse industry. Their voice is worth 3 cents on every $100 earned.

Nothing coming out of that meeting is going to change the fact that our horses are not raised as food animals. There is no getting around the drug regulations. For them to have a slaughter plant, they need a national passport system and a mechanism to remove horses from the food chain that have received substances banned by the FDA and EU and they need a market. Unless they are planning on shutting down the racing industry and not using horses for work, service or performing, what horses will they slaughter? Virtually all horses in the US are wormed and receive bute at some point in their life. How many people do you know that have herds of horses standing around in a pasture doing nothing else but eating and waiting to go to slaughter? All wild equidae meat, except zebra meat is prohibited by the EU so their grand plan of slaughtering our Mustangs is not going to happen unless they plan on painting black and white stripes on the wild horses and burros. The wild ones in holding have all been wormed and those with injuries have been treated with bute.

There is nothing on their agenda to discuss the drug issue and that speaks volumes. They don’t want facts. They want to continue repeating the same ol lies they’ve been spewing for years. They have never listened to the truth and they are certainly not going to listen to opposing views at their meeting. They are in control and with no speakers that oppose their view, audience comments will be limited and given no credibility. They even have a session on how to get around and protect themselves against us “radical, tree hugging, vegan activists”.

I would prefer that people give money to Animals’ Angels to continue their investigations or advocacy groups that are trying to change things and/or helping horses. Instead of buying a ticket to Vegas, buy a ticket to DC and meet with legislators to get the horse protection bills passed.

If they wanted to listen to the facts, slaughter would have ended years ago.

Vicki, Look at it like this: If rescuers can give $$$ to the KBs to save some horses, why not $$$ to the pros to have our voices heard? After all this is a one time deal, not a business relationship with them....worth it to some to have an anti-slaughter presense there to counteract the BS at the very least. Who cares what the pros do or do not want to hear? It is the undecided ones sitting on the fence and yes, they will be there too. I know we have "heard it all before" but this truley is a unique and "historic" event as is the "1st annual" and there will be more to come if we dont take measures to counter act. It is just the same as when I was encouraging everyone to join the AHC to even out the scales a little on the anti-slaughter side....how can we ever expect them to change if we dont "get in there" with them and "devide and conquor" them?
Vicki all this stuff you are telling me in (this email) we already know, so you are preaching to the choir here. This is the type of factual info we need to fling back at them in the Summit. We must make them hear truth whether it does any good or not....some will see through the BS and at the very least we will be able to say that we were there for the horses to be their TRUE voice that day...

Agree with our going or not,....people are already asking "Where TF are our leaders in this?" So you may want to say something to them in your next article as to why no one from EWA is attending....I think all the mother orgs who have chosen not to go owe the rest of the advocates that...

The pro-slaughters organizations will go on with or without our "one-time" funding them by way of registration fees,...and I DO give to Animal Angels and other worthy orgs but that shouldnt stop me from doing other things,...and I DONT put ANY faith in our legislators for they ALL are a bunch of liars, crooks and thieves. I thought you and your Org would have realized this by now. None of those bills are no good for the horses anyhow. They were all created to give the pro-slaughters and wild horse haters what they want and YOU are supporting them (and the continued death of our horses) by supporting and believing in their phoney bills).

As many of you have heard, January 3rd-6th will be a sad day for horses. There is a conference in Las Vegas at the South Point Casino called, “The Summit of the Horse Conference”. This conference is a meeting of the biggest pro-slaughter heads in the country. In tonight's Summit of the Horse Blog we share a positive and a negative.

First, we have been honored and had our hearts warmed by a number of horse rescue owners who have sought us out to thank us for our work in providing a necessary option for horse owners.

As our President, Dave Duquette says, "No one really cares to think about horses getting processed. The reality is many horses are suffering far worse lives and deaths than a quick, humane death could ever be. Please help us help them through our realistic system that will end unnecessary suffering." To that end, we are issuing an open invitation to other rescues and equine programs who agree with our pragmatic approach to work with us to help as many horses as possible find new purposes and new homes...and to ensure proper humane handling for those where such a fate is not possible.

In regards to the second post, it is probably no secret to anyone who has been involved in horse issues in recent times that there are so-called horse "advocates," some of whom are vicious and unprincipled who continue to lie, twist the truth, and attack individuals rather then engage in any kind of reasoned civil discourse. Being at ground zero of many of those attacks I long ago came up with a standard procedure:
If the message contains a direct threat of violence it gets immediately sent to the FBI who maintains a file specifically for this purpose.

If the message engages in name-calling or disrespectful language the sender is immediately placed on my "blocked" list so that I never have to be subjected to abuse from that particular source again.

If the message maintains at least a minimum of decorum, but is opposed to what we are doing, I respond respectfully with the logic and reasons behind our various positions...this is the way that we can come to a better place.
Civility matters, and we will tolerate no less.

For this reason, and because we became aware of an effort to organize a protest of our Summit, we have established the following policy:

Protests and/or disruptive behavior inside the Summit room will not be tolerated-anyone creating or participating in such disruptions will be immediately escorted out by security and all registration dues or other funds will be forfeited.

Everyone is welcome at the Summit of the Horse, and welcome to express their opinion so long as they are respectful of other participants and decorum is maintained. There will be disagreements, of course, but that does not mean that we have to be disagreeable.

As friends pointed us towards this effort to disrupt the Summit, it lead us to cold hard proof of what we have suspected all along. These groups which feed on misinformation and emotional scare tactics are engaging in absolutely blatant fraud by encouraging their supporters to look up the zip codes in an elected officials district and claim to live there sending many multiples of the same message, and vowing to make thousands of phone calls using fraudulent addresses and names. Classic astroturfing--an artificial manufactured political movement designed to give the appearance of grass roots activism.

Needless to say, we have informed Congress and the Administration and the Agencies of this travesty with the firm suggestion that they ignore any and all such mass campaigns.

and Poke'ettes In today's Summit of the Horse blog we share a very scary encounter with an animal rights terrorist who is being allowed to incite violence against animal owners, restaurants, anywhere animals or animal products are used. This terrorist is able to recruit openly at college campuses. The message here is that animal rights terrorists are alive, well, free, walking amongst us and inciting violence against you and your family.

Secondly, we share a visual image that points out dramatically that there is no such thing as a vegan. Human beings always have, and always will use animal products--it is the natural order of the way the world works that is embraced by every major religion, our lasting traditions and philosophies. The whole animal rights agenda is dangerous, morally and ethically corrupt.

Animal rights terrorists and Mother Nature are cruel. As responsible and caring animal owners we don't have to be...it is our moral duty to ensure that the animals we own or manage are well cared for, and that when we use them, or harvest them, that they are honored and respected, and that they are handled in humane ways.

Them: Nope. none of us are planning on attending...too much money, too far away, & too many horses to take care of. sigh.

Me: I have and am putting the question to all of them. Too bad it didnt cross Madelene's mind to help us all organize for this thing.
Them: I talked to steven long of horseback magazine & he said that he didn't know of any one who was going, either.....
Me: Now dont you think that a god damn shame? Dont you think it is a golden opportunity to meet the oposition head on, point for point? Dont you think this event should be MANDATORY for our leaders on the anti-slaughter side, or am I the only one?

Me: I heard she just helped Lifesavers rescue 100 wild horses that were on their way to slaughter....still...can we not multi-task when needed? That is the problem. Everyone is working on "their own thing." Lack of organization in the anti-slaughter camp is nothing new. Meanwhile, the pros are gaining ground and we are going to let this golden opportunity to intelligently debate with our opponents slip by? Think of the coverage it will get when we soundly round them out with the hard questions and the cold hard facts. I am so ashamed of our so called "leaders." NOW is a crutial time. I am about to give up on it myself. No unity of purpose.

Available horse meat a modern reality

I am a Saskatchewan horse breeder and cattle rancher. I read your Aug. 26 article ( "Horse breeding industry faces crisis") with interest and an open mind, and I feel compelled to give a different perspective.

In regard to Betty Coulthard's problems and the emotions spawned by the reality of product demand, I agree that it is difficult to see young horses go to slaughter plants.

However, I feel the same way about a pen of nice fat steers or heifers or a favourite productive cow that has spent her time on earth doing what she was meant to do - turning the earth's grasses and grains into life-sustaining protein.

After all, the relationship between mankind and forage-consuming animals has existed for well over 1,000 years.

Ms. Coulthard's perspective could be suspect to a lot of breeders and horse owners and potential new industry players. Making a statement such as " you have to raise 100 horses to get two good ones" is self-defeating when it comes to getting the public and horse enthusiasts to spend hard-earned dollars on the product of a specific breeding program.

In my program, I think if I raise one poor animal in 10, then I need to correct the problem as quickly as possible. In fact, I have a sales production program that includes a guarantee of a horse's quality, given proper care and animal husbandry is in place in the prospective customer's facility.

The truth about the price of horses is multifaceted. Part of it relates to the PMU industry.Canadian PMU producers were persuaded by the buyer of their product to produce papered stock to eliminate the impression that they were raising horses destined for human consumption. Producers complied.

Supply and demand set the price on the horses, and producers had to sell them to the pleasure and performance horse industry to comply with their contract holder and their own association. The result: a massive number of papered horses of varying quality. It created a glut on the market.

Producing high quality sport horses is a tough game to play. Even the best bred prospects sometimes do not work out as well as intended.

This has left a sour taste in the mouths of many people who invested in PMU bred horses. A number of these horses work out well but a greater number prove to be a poor investment.

Good horses still bring good money. The same is true of all top quality products. And yes, it's true that the market does not bear as much fruit as it did 10 years ago. We are in recession and everyone is included, horse breeders and users alike.

At this time in our history, horses are a luxury. Supply and demand are the dominant factors in this world and probably always will be.

North Americans are foolish and wasteful. Apparently we are so rich that we can, because of an emotional misconception, afford to throw away one of the highest quality red meat sources in the world.

Horse meat is lower in fat and cholesterol than beef or bison. It has higher protein per gram and is also rich in trace elements.

In our culture, obesity is running rampant, causing all kinds of expensive and damaging health issues. Yet we think eating horse meat is a sin, while the rest of the world consumes more than four million horses per year and has lower obesity rates.

This is a ridiculous situation. We have people in our own country who struggle to feed their families a good balanced diet. At the same time we sell our horses to a few fully integrated horse meat market retailers for a fraction of what they are worth on the world market.

I have been told that a 1,200 pound horse, when processed, retails for an average of $ 2,750 per animal. If you figure a yield of 65 percent on the rail, the meat is worth $3.52 per lb.

I have also heard that in some European and Asian regions, the best cuts can sell for up to $40 per lb. Of course, those would be fed horses for a specific market but it nevertheless appears that horse meat is worth a premium to beef in a lot of countries.

We see horses sold in this country for a measly 20 to 40 cents per lb., all because there is no domestic demand.

Yet 4.6 million horses are consumed by humans every year in other countries and cultures. Are we to assume these cultures are ethically corrupt, uncivilized or less intelligent than North Americans are?

The animal rights people have been successful in shutting down the slaughter horse industry in the United States, making U.S. slaughter horses worthless. Integrated retailers are able to buy American horses for the cost of assembly and trucking.

It seems unbelievable, but the anti-slaughter groups and animal rights people are crushing the taxable economic activity of the horse industry. At the same time they are enabling the horse slaughter monopolies in Canada and Mexico to make bigger profits than ever.

Using horses to sustain human life is far more respectful of these animals than to let them starve or put them down and waste their remains.

HR 503 Not Worth Fighting For: Call for Operation Start Over

I have just been going over the latest version of HR 503, our "Anti-Horse Slaughter Bill (now S. 503 currently stalled in Committee) and after reading it, it suddenly dawned on me, this bill, as amended, does little to protect horses from slaughter....and sounds like the amendments could have been written by people of the likes of Sue Wallis. Read it and see what you think and Iwill get back to explaining why I think this bill is NO good and was written (same as the ROAM Act) to placate the anti-voters while at the same time allowing the pro-exactly what they want,....loopholes in the law that would allow the slaughter of our American Horses to Continue....

It also makes the Secretary of Agriculture responsible for all unwanted horses and encumbers tax payers with the cost of reimbursment to the owners of same. They are asking for $5,000.000 to enact this bill....(another reason it will never pass) and I am wondering WHY should the Secretary be responsible for the owners "unwanted" horses? Why should the tax payers have to pay, and why cant they just make a simple bill that says NO AMRICAN EQUINES should be slaughtered and that the owners will be responsible for the proper and humane disposal of their unwanted ones? Provisions holding the owners accountable for their own just might help cut the over-breeding down. Isnt that exactly what is needed, and what we want?

It does reaffirm in the bill that horses are not traditional food animals and should be "protected" from slaughter....AND THAT is a very good thing we must NEVER lose track of, but, it turns out though, in the context of this bill, they mean "protection" only for some. There are loop-holes that will allow some to be slaughtered even for human consumption. Why cant they just come right out and say that the slaughter any American Equine any reason should be prohibited, across the board? If we recognize that horses (in America) are not food animals, why should we allow ANY of them to be slaughtered for any reason? Slaughter is a horror reserved for food chain animals ONLY....there is no other reason to kill an animal in that way except to consume its flesh. Slaughter is never and can never be humane under any conditions. There is NO SUCH THING AS HUMANE SLAUGHTER. Anyone who says there is is a fool.

Recognizing the importance of the horse in our history, the 106th Congress designated Dec 13th as The National Day of the Horse. (A day I am ashamed to say, that most equine advocates ignore)

Several years ago, Author of HR 503, Congressman Conyers, pushed a bill through that designated JAZZ as a National Treasure.....so why not for American Equines too? After all, its our American Equines that are tortured and killed, NOT any Jazz Musicians!

What is needed is a bill designating American Equines as National Treasures and Recognizing that they are not a food animal in the USA and PROHIBITING their slaughter anywhere for any reason, period. Its really is that simple....why do the politicians, even those who proport to be our supporters, why do they keep mucking it up, dragging it on and on?

Could it be because they are ALL, everyone of them to a number, a bunch of liars, and cheats and thieves who will promice us anything but do little or nothing in furtherance of our goals?

Politicians: Should We Care if We Piss Them Off?

There is an old argument rearing its head again in the anti-horse slaughter camp. Once again we are finding ourselves facing a critical time in the battle to get HR 503 (the anti-horse slaughter bill) passed, as Congress is getting ready to end this session in a couple of weeks, we are anxious to get our bill put up for a vote before it ends. The Action Alerts have been furiously flying about all across the internet, urging the advocates to bombard our legislators & The Speaker of the House with phone calls, emails, faxes and letters, asking them to help get HR 503 up for a vote right away. As usual, the dedicated advocates from all over the world responded to the call and commenced upon a vigorous emailing, faxing and telephone calling campaign. Just as its effects were beginning to take effect, word starts going round that some one or two of the advocates are complaining that we should not be "bothering" the speaker of the house and/or certain other named politicos, and likening our actions to "harassment" and accusing us of pissing the politicians off. They say that we are causing problems in their offices, jamming up fax machines and tying up telephone lines, and I have no doubt that it is true. ! In some cases, they have actually had to set up new telephone numbers and lines, just to handle all our calls!
Further evidence of the great work that we do when we all put our heads together for one purpose and one goal. So I cant understand whats up with those who are saying "dont bother this one" or "dont bother that one" crap? Have they totally lost their minds?

Who and/or what are they trying to protect? Some are even alleging that our "bothering" certain of the politicians and/or our "pissing them off" is COSTING us their support, thinking ("they" say) that we are a bunch of crazies and wackos that they dont want nothing to do with, and, it is further alleged, that by losing their support, we are COSTING the lives of more horses! Now what do we make of that POV?

In view of the conflicting messages, the advocates are now confused, and who can blame them? They see such conflicting messages as a division in our leadership. But the truth of the matter is that there can be no division of leadership simply because the anti-horse slaughter folk HAVE no real leadership or organization as a whole. There is no one individual, or group of individuals, nor any PACs or organization on a national level that could lay any legitimate claim to a leadership role for the movement as a whole. In any event, we are much too diverse a group as a whole to have any one person or org that could ever represent us all with our varying and diverse views. Yes we all want the same things: an end to horse-slaughter and an end to the BLMs cruel round-ups & proper management of our American Herds, but we all have different ideas on the best strategies to utilize in going about accomplishing these goals. There are those that go out into the streets and protest. There are those of us who would never do such a thing. There are those of us that write petitions and there are those of us who never sign. There are those of us who travel DC at every possible opportunity to talk to the politicians and advocate on the horses behalf. Then there are those that cant travel but wish they could. They will stay home and write letters, make calls, and send out faxes to have their own point of views and ideas heard. The anti-horse slaughter movement has ALWAYS been a collective effort embarked upon by the various individuals and groups as well as organizations, drawn of people from across all walks of life. No one person or org was ever or could ever claim to be a "leader," a "spearhead" or a "spokesperson" for us all, even those who have been "in the fight" the longest, or even those with "boots on the ground" or "in the trenches." All have their own ideas of just what are the best solutions or the best ways to go about effecting them. That is not to say that such diversion is a bad thing, in fact, generally, such diversion works to the betterment of the campaign on the whole, as it helps to foster discussion and debate which helps formulate new ideas. However, when that diversion causes confusion among the advocates and they dont know what to do, it is not a good thing. Everything comes to a standstill and it only adds to their exasperation and discouragement. That is why I feel this is an important issue to discuss at this time.

First off, let me express straight out my own personal feelings on the matter, and it is as simple as this; I do not think we should worry in the least little bit about pissing the politicos off, ANY of them,....and here's why: Our ability to anger or to frustrate them is the most powerful tool we have!

There are two kinds of ways to wage a war and/or work for change, and BOTH play an equally important role. There is the "polite" way and then there is the "not so" polite way (shall we say "the angry, mad or crazy" way?) Lets do. But to put it more succinctly,...there is "ask" and then there is "demand."

Those fighting the "polite" way I call "the negotiators." They meet with the big-whigs in Washington and have to be nice and prim and proper and mind their manners when they are begging and pleading and trying to reason with them. They never cuss or show their anger as they ask for consideration, and they almost never DEMAND the change they are seeking to effect, at least not in any sort of an angry, threatening or intimidating way." In law, we call this "Snots and Bugars" pleading. Now dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this kind of campaigning, and is definitely needed if we are ever to realize our goals. Yes ANY movement needs "polite negotiators," but the "uncontrollable crazies" are also needed as well. Indeed these are the sort of warriors that the politicos are afraid of the most, simply because we are un-controlable, and if the "polite" warriors were smart, instead of attempting to silence us or dis-associate themselves from us, they should be using our collective craziness and anger as a bargaining chip or a leverage tool when going about hob-nobbing in the halls of Congress looking to get support for our bill. Bottom line is, there really is no controlling us and I think this is something that the polite warriors need to let the politicians know. What they need to be reminding them is that, if our emailing and calling campaigns are bothering them,....they themselves (the politicians, that is) can either (1) give us what we want or (2) issue a statement to us that they have heard our concerns and let us know what they intend to do (or not do) about it. If indeed we are "bothering" any of them, it should be they that let us know, not our fellow advocates. If it is true that "bothering" or "angering" the politicians is costing the movement support in the halls of congress, then so be it, but I doubt that this is true. If a politician supports our cause, he will not abandon it simply due to a few "crazies." On the other hand, if a politician does not want to support us but is afraid to come right out and say it, well there is a handy excuse for them to disassociate themselves from us. It is a convenient excuse for them, but we shouldnt let such things deter us from the mission at hand,..which is to BOMBARD the Politicios, EVERY ONE OF THEM,... consistantly,...with our pleas and demands.

I have always been of the mind that we should use every weapon available to us in any war that we are serious about winning . If we stuck to fighting only in a "polite" way, asking and pleading and trying to reason with them, all the while NOT wanting to or scared to "piss anybody off," then we are not using EVERY weapon available to us, and most certainly not our most powerful and effective ones. Anger is a gift and should be utilized in the most effective way, not suppressed. The most effective way to use our anger I think, would be to direct it toward those who are in the best position to bring about the change we are asking for, ...and that is clearly the politicians....so why hold back on anything? Why not "give it all we got?" Bombs away, I say. Upon each and every one of them. Spare NO ONE..not Pelosi, or Conyers, or Moran, no one with the power to give us what we want should be left out. NOW is the time to TURN UP the heat on everyone. Bombs away, I say! Hit 'em all! They WILL hear what you have to say. Dont let anybody misguide you or intimidate you into "lightning up" on any one of them.

A little background-
The trio is called the 'Dry Town Drifters'.
My husband Aaron Hahn has a background in music and is co-founder of the rescue with me. Aaron has been performing publicly for about 20 years. His background is in music composition. He was a member of a jazz group and has been a drum major. He attended Lebanon Valley College as a music major. He composes as well as plays. He has played an evening at Robert's Western World in Nashville. He is lead guitar and main vocals.
The bass player, Darrell MacDonald,has been playing base for almost 30 years. He played publicly with Little Texas, and in Lonesome Dove, a local band that toured the east coast.
The drummer, Rich Stiles, has been performing on percussion for about 30 years. He was in a jazz group during his college years at SUNY Cortland and played in the band 'Revolutions' at local venues during the late 80's and into the 90's. Rich has adopted a horse from us and is the proud owner of 5 equines including an ex-racer.
All 3 gentleman have background in country music.

A 3rd human case of the deadly Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) was
confirmed Monday [23 Aug 2010] by the Michigan Department of
Community Health. EEE is a mosquito-borne [virus] disease spread like
the West Nile virus. Last week, 2 human cases were reported in
Kalamazoo County. Symptoms could include fever, headache, chills and nausea.

These are the people that will outbid you at auction while you are trying to buy a cute little horse or pony for your granchild, these are the people that will answer FREE TO A GOOD HOME ads for your horse and will promice to provide a "forever loving home" to your beloved animal - and take him directly to $laughter. These are the people that CHOOSE to earn their living bringing horses, yes, even "good" horses, to $laughter as a way of life. They travel all over the country and keep 'kill-pens" or feedlots at various locations throughout the U.S., Canada & Mexico. These are the people that will keep seriously injured, sick and suffering horses alive that SHOULD BE, NEED TO BE euthanised RIGHT AWAY but keep them alive anyways and let them suffer because they know a horse must be alive and standing "on at least three legs" to go to $laughter. These are the people that realize and exploit the fact that there is a BIG demand abroad for horsemeat and BIG money to be made right here in the good ole' USA supplying that foreign demand. FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- A local horse trading operation has become the focus of animal cruelty allegations, but the company under scrutiny says there's no basis for the group's concerns.

Tucker Brothers, LLC, has been targeted by the animal rights Web site Thomas Paine's Corner (www.thomaspainescorner.wordpress.com) for the alleged neglect and starvation of horses on their farm located a few miles south of Fort Scott.

Jason Miller, senior editor and founder of Thomas Paine's Corner, said the content posted on the Web site was provided to him by "anonymous individuals" who claim to have witnessed the mistreatment.

Raymond Tucker, owner of Tucker Brothers, LLC, said the allegations are false. He did say that he has thin horses on his property which consists of about 1,000 acres of pasture. He said the horses were thin when he bought them, noting that the economy has caused many people to sell or auction their horses because they can no longer afford to keep them. In addition to buying horses, Tucker added, many people will bring "sorry" horses to his property and leave them there.

"I buy sorry horses and a lot of people bring sorry horses out here and dump them out," Tucker said. "It's the economics of the thing, people are just getting rid of their horses in a mass exodus right now.

"We don't mistreat them, you can't find a hotshot in my barn ... whenever we load horses, we load them on goose-necks, we don't use semi trailers."

Further allegations against Tucker are that he does not provide sufficient food or water for the horses on his farm. Tucker said the horses that are too thin to be shipped to buyers get "turned out" or sent to pasture. and they graze his 1,000 acres of live creeks, ponds, and grass that is "belly deep."

"They have plenty of water, plenty of grass," he said. "Nobody is beating on one, nobody is mistreating one ... no matter how sorry they are.

"If I kick (a horse) out to pasture ... (it) gets a chance to fatten up ... They either fatten up or they die ... that's just the cold hard reality of life."

Tucker has also been alleged to ship horses to slaughter houses in Mexico or Canada. Tucker said he sends about 100 horses each week to a buyer in El Paso, Texas, who then decides whether to sell the horse or sent it to a slaughter house in Mexico.

"I don't sell directly to slaughter houses, but a lot of them end up there," Tucker said.

Although he does not send the horses to slaughter houses, Tucker believes that slaughter houses being outlawed in the United States was a bad idea and blames the "tree-hugging liberal do-gooders" for the action. He said before it was outlawed, horses rarely had to be transported more than 400 miles to be slaughtered, now they travel well over 1,000 miles.

"Since they quit killing horses in the United States, why that (the lengthy trip) is the worst thing that ever happened to a horse," he said.

Tucker had been contacted by Miller for the first time Thursday during a one-hour long telephone conversation. As a result of the conversation, Tucker invited Miller, who he described as "completely ignorant," to tour the farm and see all the horses Saturday evening.

"I want to go down there and take a look ... I'm concerned based on some pictures," Miller said. "I'm not quite sure what I'm going to find when I get there."

Tucker added, "There is nothing secretive, nothing mysterious -- we just buy and sell horses."

Bourbon County Sheriff Ron Gray said that he is currently investigating the allegations and has made contacts with state officials. He said that with the holiday weekend a response from the state is not expected until sometime next week.

Thomas Paine's Corner was founded in 2005 by Miller to promote the belief that the oppression and exploitation in the world is rooted in the way society and culture treat animals.

"It's pretty multi-dimensional, but we tend to focus mostly on an animal rights agenda ... but it is anti-oppression, anti-exploitation in general," Miller said.

If my horse were to give an Independence Day Speech before Congress, this is what he would say:

I do not know why you have asked me to speak here today, nor do I understand what object you have asked me to represent in the celebration of your Independence Day. You celebrate freedom and justice, reflected in your Declaration of Independence, but that paper does not apply to me, or to any other animal that shares this earth with you.

For your sake, I am pleased that you have reached such high levels of freedom. Would that sole document reflect your outlook for horses as for humans, I would be first to celebrate with you. Sadly, such is not the case, for horses are not included, nor are the safeties and securities granted to you held in common with those of us who have helped you build this great nation. This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. As you celebrate, I must mourn for the loss of millions of my kind to your lust for power and money.

To halter me, tie a lead rope on me and pull me into this magnificent hall to speak of your freedom is once again a sample of your inhumane treatment and a mockery to the justice of which you are so proud. You, who have thrown the bodies of dead horses in stacks that reach to the heavens, ask one of us to tell you of the glories of America? I think not.

For it is not your joy I hear, nor the fireworks booming in the skies. I hear the cry of millions of my kind, tied in backyards, stuck in dark, wet stalls, left unfed and unloved. I hear the plaintive moan of those being trucked thousands of miles to face a horrible death at your hands. As I look out at you, I see them and what you have allowed to happen to them in your name.

On your Independence Day, the future of my kind looks far darker than ever before. Far worse than the conduct of those who occupied these seats in the years before you came, those of you who presently sit within this majestic hall now conduct yourselves with an arrogance that is both revolting and hideous. You have tied yourselves to the pockets of those who profit from the suffering of my kind, you make false statements on their behalf and refuse to represent those constituents whose vote brought you into this once hollowed hall of honor.

I do not stand before you as the honored guest, representing the triumphant battles for freedom I fought with you. I do not stand as your partner in memory of or great history together as we conquered nations, fought our way to the west, plowed fields and fed millions with our combined labor. I will not, for I now know, as do those citizens who call me their friends, what you truly think of my kind. You who occupy these seats have trampled upon the Constitution for the right to pocket pieces of gold. You refuse to represent the horses of this nation when we turned to you. You have made fun, ridiculed and ignored those citizens you represent as they have pleaded our case before you, and for that I can say nothing positive about you, the system you represent or the freedoms you allegedly vowed to protect.

Do I need to stand before you and argue that the slaughter of horses is wrong? That point is past. It is conceded and acknowledged in private and only disputed in public by the repetitious lies of those who profit from your murderous ways. Do I need to show you the truth behind the lies? They are known and open for you, if you are of the mind to look beyond the hands of those who give you money for your next reelection effort. Do I need to tell you of those citizens whom you allegedly represent who want you to stop the slaughter? Look at your call logs, your emails, your fax machines.

Am I to tell you that it is wrong to have us stolen from our loved humans, to be beaten with sticks, shocked, transported without rest or water, shoved into kill chutes, terrorized and injured by captive bolts or guns, hung by our legs while we are still alive and sold by the pound when we are dead? There is not a man among you who would suffer to the point of death as we do, yet you deny us the right to be free from this horror.

What then is your argument, that you have a divine right to our death? That your interpretation of dominion gives you a reason to kill us for the dollars it places in your pockets? Is that indeed your concept of God's will? If that is your God, then those humans who love us are not a part of your world.

Those days of intellectual debates are a thing of the past. You do not need to hear the arguments, nor do you need to see the light. Instead, you will feel the thunder, stand in the storm and be burned by the firestorm you created, for those humans that support our freedom are aroused and your hypocrisy toward the honor of your Constitution will bring your downfall.

Do not ask me to celebrate with you, for I am not free. I am your slave, to be destroyed at your whim. Only when you grant the right of the American people to turn their beliefs into laws that stop the insane practice of horse slaughter will I be able to stand before you in honor.

Killbuyer Makes Killing Off of Rescuers Sympathetic Cash

Got the news today that a horse rescuer bought six horses from a kill-buyer (Charlie Carter?; http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/aainvestigationsco0909.pdf )

saving them from the prospect of being shipped to slaughter, I say a "possible" trip because not all horses owned by killbuyers actually do go to slaughter. Naturally they are going to try to sell off some of their better ones to get "the biggest bang" for their investment. They are, after all, businessmen and horse-traders as well as meat-marketeers' too. They are not going to bring a "saleable" horse to slaughter if they can get more for it as a riding or breeding horse. If a killbuyer cant sell the horse casually to one of his own friends or acquaintances, then chances are that horse will go to slaughter, and thats where the rescues come in. The killbuyers love the rescuers and play greatly on their sympathies, ...the more sympathy the rescuers show for a particular horse, the more money can be gleaned from them. For instance, the story today comes from Zumas Blog; http://zumasrescueranch.wordpress.com/2010/06/28/2351/

Here you will learn that a killbuyer bought a bunch of horses at auction for about $150.00 each. The rescuers wanted to purchase six (6) of these horses from the killbuyers, and did so, sure, no problem. The KBs LOVE those "parking lot" deals. The killbuyer charged them $600 a horse. So the killbuyer paid $900 for the 6 horses altogether, and sold them to the rescuers for $3,600, which netted him a quick fast and easy $2,700 profit. So yes, six horses are safe now, in good hands, (except for one in such bad shape it had to be euthanized) and you may say well worth the $$$$ spent , and be that as it may. But think of how many "cheap" horses that $3,600 would have saved! The down side to dealing with killbuyers is that the rescues invloved with them only serve to enrich the killbuyers, and makes the despicable business even more lucrative for them,...when in fact the idea is supposed to be to shut the killers down for good for their infamous cruelties and violations of many laws!

Two questions come to my mind right away, and number one is this; if the horses were being sold at auction that day and were bringing only $150 each,....why werent the rescuers there, at the auction house, fervently BIDDING AGAINST the Killers? They most certainly could have, and would have probably gotten them much cheaper too! Just think of how many $150-$200 horses that $3,600 would have saved!

My number two question is this: How much animal cruelty, abuse or neglect have they witnessed at these auction houses of horror or in the killbuyers feedlots that they did not report, and why?

Apparently these feedlot rescuers have no care that the auction house and feedlot cruelty and violations continue on as they carry on their business with the KBs, nor do they care there are DOZENS of other ways to save endangered horses with out having to "get near" a KB let alone crawl in bed with them.

Hearts in right place - Heads on Wrong (Up Ass) . Stop thinking with your heart, use your head. Have no dealings with the killbuyers UNLESS you are working to shut them down or at least make them operate by the rules. GET TOUGH with them like they are tough with the horses and with you! Tell them to GIVE you the horses you want or you will dedicate your life to shutting them down for their GROSS violations of law!Do anything you can to SHUT THEM DOWN - instead of helping them to thrive!

Be not the grease for the cogs of the horses-t0-slaughter machine. Do not lubricate it with your "sympathetic cash" to the KBs. Stop greasing the wheels of their bloody war machines and work more towards dismantling them. It wouldnt take much you know, to drive them right out of business, if we insisted they work within the law, if we kept a better eye on them, if we reported their abuses more. Give them the good swift kick in the ass that they so badly need, instead of shaking their hands or patting them on the backs, calling them "business partners" or "friends," and even partying with them after-hours after all the dirty dealing is done.

Consorting with the enemy in times of war is a treasonable offense, of which there is NO defense.

Focus your energies on reporting auction house and KB feedlot abuse, there is enough of it going round to give you plenty of ammo to complain,....file enough complaints and push for full prosecution to make them operate within the law or shut the Mother F***ers down! WASHINGTON - April 27, 2010 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) today announced the signing of a procedural agreement with Mexico's National Service of Health, Food Safety, and Agro-Alimentary Quality (SENASICA). The "Terms of Reference" is a documented procedure for the way in which FSIS engages with its Mexico counterpart, SENASICA. The document has been a collaborative effort between the governments of Mexico and the U.S., and represents a new level of interaction and cooperation between FSIS and SENASICA.

"FSIS has been working diligently with SENASICA on this agreement to improve how we work together," said FSIS Administrator Al Almanza. "Through the cooperation of SENASICA, we can jointly continue to enhance our efforts in ensuring food safety and protecting public health."

The ceremony brought senior representatives from SENASICA to Washington, D.C. to sign the document, "Terms of Reference for the Operational Relationship of the Mexican National Service of Health, Food Safety, and Agro-Alimentary Quality and the United States Food Safety and Inspection Service in the Trade in Meat, Poultry and Egg Products Between the United Mexican States and The United States of America" with FSIS officials. FSIS Administrator Al Almanza and SENASICA Director in Chief Enrique Sanchez-Cruz signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.

The agreement was intended to provide an opportunity for improvement of established procedures. FSIS and SENASICA worked together after SENASICA's request to FSIS for written standard procedures by which the agencies interact on matters of food safety and public health.

The US Department of Agriculture has released a preliminary study revealing existing gaps in the regional food systems regarding the availability of slaughter facilities to small meat and poultry producers.
The study by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is a first attempt to identify areas in the US where small livestock and poultry producers are concentrated but may not have access to a nearby slaughter facility.

"To support consumer demand for locally produced agricultural products, meat producers need to have access to local or regional slaughter facilities, and the study we are releasing shows that there is often a shortage of facilities needed to bring food to market," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

"The 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative is working to address various shortcomings in the food supply chain on behalf of our country's producers and consumers. If there is a stronger, closer link between production and consumption, there is often an economic benefit," he added.

The data creates a county-by-county view of the continental US, indicating the concentration of small farms raising cattle, hogs and pigs, and chicken, and also noting the location of nearby state slaughter facilities and small and very small federal slaughter establishments. The USDA defines "small slaughter establishments" as those having between 10 and 499 employees, and "very small slaughter establishments" as having fewer than 10 employees or less than $2.5 mln in annual sales. For the purpose of the study, small livestock and poultry producers are those who have annual sales of $250,000 or less.

The question was asked about how we at EWA feel about our progress against horse slaughter this year.

Please understand that we regard this whole process as an analogy to war. It is not fought on a single front or with a single strategy and there are many operations that we cannot talk about without giving away our advantage. Sometimes we can divulge things later, and sometimes not at all. For example, you probably now know that we worked hard to get the town of Harding access to the pollution and sewer records from Cavel, Dallas Crown and NVF. We did not go to them and say "please don't build a plant that kills our beautiful horses." We showed them that a plant would be bad for the community and we also showed them that there was no pot of gold.

So federal legislation is only one battlefield. The bad guys have high paid strategists and last year they unveiled their strategy. It was to use the heavily agricultural state legislatures to push for horse slaughter legislation. They knew these state laws could not in themselves allow them to bring back slaughter, but the idea was to make it look like a backlash was growing in the country's ag belt. In politics, momentum is everything. Since they too kept their plans secret until the last moment, they had early successes. Almost all military attacks that are kept secret have early success, and this was no difference. We had no defenses or plans to stop them.

But the bad guys squandered their advantage with truly stooopid laws like Ed Butcher's in Montana. And in every state where laws were introduced last year, horse friendly people quickly began coming together to fight them. This year was a total and complete zero for the pro-slaughter legislation. More over, Sue Wallis has begun to wear thin on her own state residents.

There are many aspects, as I have said. We continue to push the federal legislation, but please recognize that it does not even need to pass to be important. As long as a federal ban is a real possibility, no businessman in his right mind is going to build a horse slaughter plant in the US. All this talk out of Wyoming and Montana is just that, and the press is beginning to realize it.

After Butcher got his bill passed in Montana, he began bragging to the press that he was going to bring a wonderful horse slaughter plant to the town of Hardin and that he was talking to investors with Chinese business contacts. He had originally said last year that he was talking to the "Belgians". So his change of nation told us that Velda has decided this is not a good place to put a plant.

Anyhow, it was devastating for Butcher to go to all that trouble only to be told by the community he was "trying to help" that they wanted no part of it. This is all his own doing since he never really looked at the history of these plants and what they do to communities. He just blew it all off as "two bit hippies". Moreover, his bill protecting horse slaughter plants from law suites was based on his misunderstanding of what had closed the US plants. None was closed by law suites over environmental concerns (although they should have been). The reporter that covered Butcher's bragging was shocked to get our release saying the town had blocked the plant over a month earlier.

We did the same kind of work when some Canadian politicians tried to get the First Nation tribe of Carry the Kettle to take over and restart the slaughter plant at Natural Valley. We got them the finances of the previous plant showing them it was a disaster and we showed them the environmental mess that they would be responsible for. The old Chief who wanted the plant lost his vote and then the next election. The man opposing him on the issue is now Chief.

We have taken the same approach with the Europeans. We don't tell them that they shouldn't eat our horses because we love horses, instead we worked on exposing the health risks involved in horse meat.

Do I feel good about this year? Darn right I do, but do I feel comfortable? No. We must watch and be ready for new moves and ploys and we must all have our noses in the wind. We are all wondering what will happen after July when the new EU regulations kick in.

Still, the work of all the groups from AC4H to AAHA, CHDC and many others has been absolutely marvelous.

I agree, completely, on the issue of boycotts being ineffective. And even though this was posted on our blog, I defer from commenting, there. The piece was written by our good friend Steven Long of Horseback Magazine and we hold a great deal of respect for Steve...plus, there is so much frustration centered around the stupidity of these two-bit, small time thugs that the discussion of boycotting SOMETHING allows our readers a chance to vent some steam.

I am too old and seen too many boycotts do nothing, but if it helps to encourage our equine advocates, then I am all for it.

R.T., With all due respect, boycotts are only ineffective when not enough people commit to the particular cause. I would be interested to know more about your boycotting experiences. What were you boycotting and how many partook and how long did the campaining go on? Were you asking for reasonable things? We should not be content with any idea simply because it would allow the venting of steam, for that would accomplish nothing but the release of a lot of hot air. If that is the only goal you will have great success there. The goal, I thought was to get our Federal anti-horse slaughter bill quickly passed. If the advocates need to vent steam (and I know they do cause I am one of them, as you know!) let them vent in the right direction where they will can "do the most good" and have a least some hope of attaining our ultimate goal which is to pass our federal bill. Think about it for a minute. How many advocates do you suppose there are spread out across the whole North American Continent, even so THE WORLD. It doent have to be a National thing. It could very well go global as I know we have a lot of support in other countries who might want to join in. Now I know you cant expect them all to commit, but imagine if we could get just a small portion of those numbers to quit buying meat until HR 503 is passed! You really dont think if we could "pull off the numbers," that a sustained, intense boycott on all meat products and "everything pro-slaughter" wouldnt be effective, wouldnt hurt the opposition economically and/or pressure them into NOT opposing our bill? This is the greatest most effective weapon we have! Its is not a matter of "boycott failure" but rather a failure of COMMITMENT & OF uNITY. Imagine if all the "mother orgs" would ENCOURAGE (instead of ignore or poo-hoo) the idea of a MAJOR boycott against meat and "all things pro-slaughter," No one can argue that the meat industry is the most powerful lobby against us in Washington, DC. And we are ignoring them and NOT targeting them with anything! Just lettin 'em right off the hook! Sometimes, just SERIOUSLY getting the word out, ...just the threat of a well organized, well publisized boycott will do the trick. Just MHO but I think I am right on this, however "unrealistic" anyone might think it would be. UNITY and COMMITTMENT to the singular cause of costing the meat industry is what it would take and so, perhaps I am expecting too much from people but, after hearing thousands upon thousands of people over the years who say that they sooooooooooo want to see it end, I thought it might be a "do-able" thing. When Christopher Dobbin crashed his big rig into the median of the Turner Turnpike, he gave the public a rare look at an issue that enrages animal welfare groups.

Thirty horses were packed in the truck, on their way to a feedlot in Texas to be fattened for slaughter in Mexico for meat.

The last U.S. slaughterhouse for horses closed three years ago. Now thousands of the animals are trucked out of the country every year to be killed for food.

A veterinary inspection permit obtained by The Oklahoman shows the destination of the horses in Dobbin’s truck as Frontier Meats, a feedlot in Morton, Texas, for ultimate shipment to a Mexican slaughterhouse.

After the accident at 6 a.m. Tuesday on the turnpike near Interstate 35, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Jerrad Real shot some of the injured animals and a veterinarian had to euthanize others.

In all, 11 horses died. The surviving animals were put in a temporary corral set up near the interstate and ultimately released to the owner, Terry Broocke of Jonesburg, Mo. Broocke did not return a phone call for comment for this story, and it’s not clear where the animals are now.

Troopers issued a reckless driving citation to Dobbin, 28, of Missouri, which is where the horse shipment originated. He allegedly fell asleep at the wheel of the truck.

Catherine English, division manager of the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Department, said horse shipments of this type are fairly common.

"Slaughterhouses in the United States were closed down for very good reasons,” she said. "So now the people who are selling horses for slaughter to eat, primarily in European markets, are going to Canada and Mexico.”

More than 90,000 American horses yearly get hauled out of the country for this purpose, according to statistics compiled by The Humane Society of the United States.

"Transport to slaughter is part of the cruelty of that industry,” said Cynthia Armstrong, Oklahoma state director for group. "This is unfortunately a common side effect of the horse slaughter industry and an inevitable one.

"When we allow people to haul horses through our state with little or no care for their welfare because they are going to be sold for human consumption in foreign countries, we can expect serious cruelty and abuse to occur.”

Papers were in order

Dr. Michael Herrin, assistant state veterinarian, checked the health certificates for the horses that were involved in the accident. The papers were in order, and there have been no allegations that any laws were broken.

It’s fairly common for slaughter horses to be shipped like cattle to Texas to be fattened for slaughter, even though many cattle trailers are unsuitable for horses’ size and temperament, he said.

Many of the horses had auction tags.

There are about 15 horse auctions that operate every week or so in Oklahoma and many more that only occasionally sell horses, he said.

Members of the public have been calling the Central Oklahoma Humane Society asking to adopt horses involved in the accident. Armstrong said she’s working on trying to get the owner to consider that option.

Meanwhile, Natalee Cross, co-founder of Blaze’s Tribute horse rescue in Jones, said the incident may serve as a sad reminder to the public.

"This particular situation happens on a daily basis. As far as horse owners go, they need to educate themselves that slaughter still goes on. If you’re taking a chance of selling your beloved horse at a sale barn, it’s not always the best ending,” Cross said.

Pending federal legislation would prohibit the export of American horses for purposes of slaughter in other countries. (Support HR 503)

On a cloudy afternoon, Gordon Mason asks his wife Gladys for help finding his cowboy hat.

“Going out in style,” she says with a faint smile.

He drops it onto his head, grabs a pretty halter and leather shank, and heads out the door to fetch his favourite saddle horse.

With a broad valley of hardwoods in the background, and a pen full of Double G Ranch’s fine quarter-horses filling out the background, Mason, 67, stands for a picture.

The land around these parts was settled by his ancestors, who first arrived in the 1880s. They even left a written account of their early struggles hauling hay with a team of oxen and making trips on foot to Brandon for supplies.

GOOD LIVING

In 1966, he started out with 17 mares on the line, as one of the first producers of pregnant mare’s urine, from which the hormone replacement drug premarin is derived.

Over the years, they added more mares as their contracts grew. Last winter, they had 66 mares in the barn.

“If you don’t overspend, it’s a good living,” said Mason. “It was a steady income. You knew what you were going to get a year or two in advance. On the contract, you knew right to the nickel. There’s not too many commodities in agriculture you can do that with.”

The Masons were among 38 PMU ranches that received notice last week from Pfizer, the company that bought out Wyeth last fall, that their contract wouldn’t be renewed.

They and other producers are to receive compensation worth 75 per cent of their last year’s production, and assistance with marketing and trucking costs in selling their animals.

DOWNSIZING

He plans to keep at least 10 horses around the place. The rest of the horses will have to be sold, because there’s not enough income from selling foals to make a go of it, he said.

Even if the owner breaks them himself, the training process takes a lot of time.

“If you get $3,000 for a horse, you’ve got that much in him by the time he’s three (or) four years old. It costs about $700 a year to keep a horse,” he said. “You’d make about five cents an hour. It takes a lot of riding to make a horse good.”

In recent decades, the PMU industry came under fire from animal rights activists. The industry responded with ever-tighter rules and regulations enforced by field managers who verified that the horses were being given proper feed, access to water, sufficient bedding straw, and regular exercise outside the barn during the winter collection season that ran from late October to March.

WELFARE CONCERNS

Also, in response to criticism that too many of the foals produced were going to the slaughter market, the North American Equine Ranching Information Council (NAERIC) created cash incentives to encourage PMU producers to raise top quality animals for a wide variety of work, recreation and sport uses.

“As far as those mares in the barn, they were all treated pretty good,” he said. “I’d rather be a PMU mare standing in a warm barn than one standing out in the bush somewhere.” (Wow..no consideration for the fact that mares are stalled so tightly that they cant turn around, let alone lay down if they want, and they are kept standing there six or eight months at a time and never get to see the sun. No mention is made here either of the fact that the mares are standing in constant pain due to a tube being shoved up into their urinary tract to catch their pee. Take a look at one of those contraptions wedged between their thighs 24 hours a day 7 days a week...the cause of much pain and discomfort not only due to chaffing and the like but oftentimes infections due to uncleanliness. PMU mares are not "happy horses" at all as this PMU farmer trys to portray....do not believe the hype. PMU mares have a TERRIBLE life,...the least of which is to have their babies torn away from them the instant they are born and are generally "thrown out back" and left to die, ..their fresh-dead young bodies sold to renderer / leather sellers so they can sell them to hi-end leather markets so fashion designers like Gucci make their "pony-skin" bags and shoes and stuff. The whole business is disgusting and there is no way to sanitize it.I am glad to hear more of these terrible places closing but the fear is, of course, what will become of these horses? We must keep our eyes on them and try to keep them from harm.)

But a 2002 study by the Women’s Health Initiative which uncovered adverse health effects from premarinbased hormone replacement therapy (HRT) sparked a steep decline for the PMU industry, and a switch to lower doses reduced demand for estrogen used for treating post-menopausal symptoms.

Lisa Ross, a spokesperson for Pfizer-owned Wyeth Canada, said in an emailed statement that a recent review of inventory requirements found that a 60 per cent cut in the number of PMU producers was necessary.

The reduction will also affect 15 per cent of the 170 workers at Wyeth’s Brandon plant, as one of three production lines is shut down.

“The company is committed to treating employees and ranchers fairly and reasonably and to helping make this transition as smooth as possible,” she wrote.

SHARP DECLINE

Greg Little, a PMU rancher from Decker and president of NAERIC, said that the news May 12 was “sad.” After last year’s cutbacks, which saw seven ranches exit, many hoped that supply and demand would stabilize.

The plan to cut back by 60 per cent that was announced recently came as a shock to many, he added, given the reduction from the peak of over 400 ranches in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Dakota in 2003. The latest round will leave 22 ranches in the province, and four in Saskatchewan.

His ranch, Little Valley Quarter Horses, was spared.

“Most of the ranchers have a lot invested in their operations and everybody feels for their horses,” he said. “I think we can find homes for them in productive markets. It’s going to take some work, but nothing comes easy in this world anymore.”

Some PMU ranchers who received bad news last week declined to comment.

Marylin Warkentin, 58, was one of the few who were willing to talk. She and husband Rob have run a 78-stall operation near Virden since 1992 with a mix of registered Belgian, Percheron and Spotted Draft horses.

Everyone in the industry has been “living on the edge” since the first big cuts in 2003, she said.

A day after being informed that their contract was being cancelled, she was undecided about what they might do, or how many horses they might keep.

“We’ve gotten used to having horses around all the time,” she said. “When we first got in, we bought seven heavy horses at a sale. Now, to go down to say 20 mares would seem like not too many horses. I guess we just have to take our time to figure it out.” daniel.winters@fbcpublishing.com

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Eating bacon, sausage, hot dogs and other processed meats can raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that identifies the real bad boys of the meat counter.

Eating unprocessed beef, pork or lamb appeared not to raise risks of heart attacks and diabetes, they said, suggesting that salt and chemical preservatives may be the real cause of these two health problems associated with eating meat.

The study, an analysis of other research called a meta-analysis, did not look at high blood pressure or cancer, which are also linked with high meat consumption.

"To lower risk of heart attacks and diabetes, people should consider which types of meats they are eating," said Renata Micha of the Harvard School of Public Health, whose study appears in the journal Circulation.

"Processed meats such as bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs and processed deli meats may be the most important to avoid," Micha said in a statement.

Based on her findings, she said people who eat one serving per week or less of processed meats have less of a risk.

The American Meat Institute objected to the findings, saying it was only one study and that it stands in contrast to other studies and the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

"At best, this hypothesis merits further study. It is certainly no reason for dietary changes," James Hodges, president of the American Meat Institute, said in a statement.

Most dietary guidelines recommend eating less meat. Individual studies looking at relationships between eating meat and cardiovascular diseases and diabetes have had mixed results.

But studies rarely look for differences in risk between processed and unprocessed red meats, Micha said.

She and colleagues did a systematic review of nearly 1,600 studies from around the world looking for evidence of a link between eating processed and unprocessed red meat and the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

They defined processed meat as any meat preserved by smoking, curing or salting, or with the addition of chemical preservatives. Meats in this category included bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs or processed deli or luncheon meats.

Unprocessed red meat included beef, lamb or pork but not poultry.

They found that on average, each 1.8 oz (50 grams) daily serving of processed meat a day -- one to two slices of deli meats or one hot dog -- was associated with a 42 percent higher risk of heart disease and a 19 percent higher risk of developing diabetes.

They found no higher heart or diabetes risk in people who ate only unprocessed red meats.

The team adjusted for a number of factors, including how much meat people ate. They said lifestyle factors were similar between those who ate processed and unprocessed meats.

"When we looked at average nutrients in unprocessed red and processed meats eaten in the United States, we found that they contained similar average amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol," Micha said.

"In contrast, processed meats contained, on average, four times more sodium and 50 percent more nitrate preservatives," Micha added.

Last month, the Institute of Medicine urged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate the amount of salt added to foods to help Americans cut their high sodium intake.

The FDA has not yet said whether it will regulate salt in foods, but it is looking at the issue.

Four dead late or full-term foetuses taken for examination at the
University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Centre showed
signs consistent with mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS). The
syndrome is linked to the accidental ingestion of eastern tent caterpillars.

The university warned in mid-April 2010
() that
caterpillar numbers were up for the 3rd consecutive year and advised
horse owners to reduce the chances of pregnant mares ingesting the
caterpillars.

The disease centre said the fetuses and foals had lesions and
bacterial isolates consistent with the syndrome. "All were either
term-foals or late-gestation fetuses," it said. "The cases occurred
as single losses on different central Kentucky farms. The 1st case
was submitted on 1 May 2010, and these cases correspond temporally
with MRLS cases occurring in prior years."

During the 2009 foaling season, about 12 cases of MRLS foal losses
were diagnosed.

Kentucky horse owners have been advised to check wild cherry and
related trees for eastern tent caterpillar activity to determine
whether management is necessary.

[Mare reproductive loss syndrome is a real syndrome which remains
somewhat elusive but which has come to be recognized as strongly
associated with the eastern tent caterpillar.

This syndrome includes early fetal loss, late fetal loss, uveitis,
pericarditis, and encephalitis, [from] tissue penetration by septic
barbed setal fragments (septic penetrating setae) from eastern tent
caterpillars (_Malacosoma americanum_). Once ingested, these barbed
setal fragments migrate through moving tissues, followed by rapid
hematogenous spread of bacteria, bacterial emboli, and/or septic
fragments of setae (septic penetrating setal emboli), collectively
referred to as septic materials.

Pathogenic bacteria, therefore, enter the horse as hitchhikers on or
in the caterpillar setal fragments, and MRLS is caused by 1) the
barbed setal fragments' ability to penetrate moving tissues,
including blood vessels, releasing septic materials which rapidly
distribute hematogenously; 2) the high sensitivity of the pregnant
mare to bacteria from such septic materials introduced into the
uterus, fetal membranes, or fetal fluids; 3) the unusually broad
spectrum of bacterial pathogens carried on or in the setal fragments;
and 4) the less effective antibacterial responses in certain
susceptible extracellular fluids (e.g., fetal, ocular, pericardial,
and cerebrospinal fluids).

These caterpillars are very small and easily consumed in the grass as
they drop off the trees surrounding the pastures. Some years are
worse for these caterpillars than other years. However, it takes 10
or less of these extremely tiny caterpillars to affect a 680 kg (1500
lbs) pregnant mare.

The eastern tent caterpillar occurs throughout the eastern United
States west to the Rocky Mountains and north into southern Canada. It
is native to the region, and references to it as a tree pest date
back to early colonial times from the mid-1600's. However, references
to it as a problem for horses seem to have begun about 2000-2001. A

The eastern tent caterpillar is largely resistant to many
insecticides. This creature is a pest to many, especially the equine industry.

Because 2 horses recently tested positive for equine infectious
anemia (EIA) in Montana, the Montana Department of Livestock's Animal
Health Division has scheduled a 17 May 2010 meeting in Gallatin
county to update local horse owners on the situation.

EIA, also called swamp fever, was reported in Gallatin county on 26
Apr 2010 after a horse tested positive following a routine Coggins test.

"The horse was going to be traveling out of state, which is how the
positive came up," said Tahnee Szymanski, DVM, a staff veterinarian
for the Department of Livestock. "As a result of the positive test, 2
more horses on the premises were tested, and we found one other positive."

50 nearby horses were also tested. As of 13 May 2010, about 45 of
those tests had come back, all negative, said Szymanski. She expected
the rest of the test results in the next day or so.

Because of the infectious nature of EIA, horses testing positive must
be euthanized or quarantined for life. The 2 positive horses were
quarantined for transport to an EIA-positive herd. Szymanski
explained that these herds are bled monthly for lab efficiency testing.

"In that way, these animals can contribute to our understanding of
the disease, and they do not have to be euthanized," she said.

EIA is spread by biting insects and through contaminated needles,
said Szymanski.

"We recommend annual testing and like to see horses that travel for
equine-related events tested twice a year," she said. "While Coggins
tests are routinely required for horses traveling out of state, some
boarding facilities and events now require negative Coggins tests as
well. Some farms also require a negative test to bring an animal in
for breeding."

The 17 May 2010 meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the Gallatin
County Fairgrounds, Building 4.

[EIA is a viral disease (EIAV) of members of the horse family.
Identified in France in 1843 and first tentatively diagnosed in the
United States in 1888, it has commanded a great deal of attention
over the years.

EIA is the 1st retrovirus-induced disease proven to be transmitted by
insects (Stein et al. 1942). And EIAV is the 1st persistent virus for
which "antigenic drift" was defined (Kono 1972). (Antigenic drift is
the virus's ability to change its form sufficiently so that it is no
longer vulnerable to existing antibodies.) Finally, EIA is the 1st
retrovirus-induced disease for which a diagnostic test was approved
(Coggins and Norcross 1972).

More recently, the EIAV has been recognized as a lentivirus, the type
that causes slowly progressive, often fatal diseases. It is a close
relative to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In fact, EIAV was the 1st
virus shown to be related to the HIV through cross-reaction in tests
of blood serum (Montagnier et al. 1984). These 2 lentiviruses share
many structural and biochemical features, and EIAV is thought to
serve as a useful model for many aspects of HIV research, especially
for discovery of common mechanisms of immunologic control (Montelaro
and Issel 1990).

An effective test for antibodies specific to EIAV was described in
1970 by Leroy Coggins, D.V.M. for collaborators (Coggins and Patten
1970) and was rapidly adopted by authorities around the world. The
agar-gel immunoddiffusion (AGID) or Coggins test was shown to
correlate with horse inoculation test results for EIAV and,
therefore, could be used to identify EIAV carriers (Coggins et al.
1972). Because only members of the horse family were shown to be
infected, programs based on serologic testing were designed and
adopted to help control the spread of EIAV (Campbell 1971).

When horses are exposed to EIAV, they may develop severe, acute signs
of disease and die within 2 to 3 weeks. This acute response is rarely
seen in natural situations, where blood-feeding insects transmit low
doses of virus.

Nonetheless, this form of the disease is the most damaging and the
most difficult to diagnose because the signs appear rapidly, and
often only an elevated body temperature is noted. At this early stage
of the infection, the horse usually tests negative for antibodies to
EIAV, and blood samples must be collected at a subsequent date
(generally 10 to 14 days later) to confirm or exclude EIA as a
diagnosis. During this period, it is prudent to quarantine the horse
(or the farm) if EIA is strongly suspected on the basis of history or signs.

The clinical signs of the acute form of EIA are rather nonspecific,
and in mild cases, the initial fever may be short lived (often less
than 24 hours). As a result, horse owners and veterinarians may not
observe this initial response when a horse is infected with EIAV.
These infected horses often recover and continue to move freely in
the population. The 1st indication that a horse was exposed to and
infected with EIAV may well be a positive result on a routine annual test.

Fever - An infected horse's temperature may rise suddenly to about
105 F or, rarely, as high as 108 F. Then, it may drop back to normal
for an indeterminate period until the onset of another episode.

Petechial hemorrhages - Minute, blood colored spots appear on the
mucous membranes.

Depression - The horse appears more or less dejected (head hangs low)
and generally listless.

Weight loss - The horse may refuse feed or may eat an inordinate
amount but still continue an obvious decline from normal weight.

Dependent edema - The horse may develop swelling, evidence of fluid
collecting under the skin in the legs, under the chest and other
underbody surfaces.

Anemia - The horse's blood may have a marked drop in its red
corpuscle count and appear thin and watery. The animal may also have
an irregular heartbeat, and a jugular pulse may become evident.

The horse with chronic EIA is the classic "swamper," who has lost
condition, is lethargic and anorexic, has a low hematocrit, and
demonstrates a persistent decrease in the number of blood platelets
(thrombocytopenia), especially coincident with fever induced by EIAV
(Clabough et al. 1991).

EIA is considered a classic blood-borne infection. People have played
an important role in EIAV transmission over the years by using
blood-contaminated materials on different horses. Although this mode
of transmission was more prevalent before serologic tests to identify
EIAV carriers were available, it is wise for owners and veterinarians
to apply the same universal precautions that are used to reduce the
risk of spreading blood-borne disease agents in humans (U.S.
Department of Labor 1992).

The EIAV most frequently is transmitted between horses in close
proximity by large biting insects, such as horse flies and deer flies
(tabanids), which inflict painful bites (Issel and Foil 1984). The
bites from these tabanids stimulate defensive movement by the horse,
which often results in an interruption of the blood-feeding. When
interrupted, the fly is motivated to complete the feeding as soon as
possible. It then attacks the same or a 2nd host and feeds to
repletion. In this manner, any infective material from the blood of
the 1st host which is present on the mouthparts of the insect can be
mechanically transmitted to the 2nd host.

Controlling the spread of EIAV involves minimizing or eliminating
contact of horses with the secretions, excretions, and blood of
EIAV-infected horses. This has been accomplished in most areas of the
world by testing and segregating test-positive horses from those that
are test-negative. When this separation is done, it is imperative to
retest the test-negative band at 30- to 60-day intervals until new
cases fail to appear. Once the reservoirs of EIAV are identified,

Euro-MPs Urge Tightning of Animal Welfare Rules

More frequent inspections and tougher penalties will be needed to enforce the next EU Animal Welfare Action Plan, says a resolution adopted by the European Parliament last week.
The current 2006-10 plan has worked well, in particular the measures taken to reduce harmful antibiotics in animal feed, but there is still room for improvement, say MEPs.

A high level of animal welfare, from breeding to slaughter, can improve product safety and quality, to the benefit of all EU consumers, argues Parliament, and welfare requirements should be mainstreamed into all relevant EU policies.

The resolution, drafted by Marit Paulsen (Sweden) and approved by show of hands, reviews the European Commission's action plan for animal welfare for 2006-2010 and suggests improvements for the next plan.

First and foremost, Parliament emphasises the need to enforce properly the existing rules, such as the ban on battery cages for hens and the rules on the protection of pigs and the transport of geese and ducks.

Imports to comply with EU standards

EU budget funding is needed to enable the Commission to monitor implementation of the law. MEPs add that animal products imported into the EU, such as meat, must also comply with welfare requirements.

For the future, MEPs call on the EU executive to propose general animal welfare legislation "to achieve a common understanding of the concept of animal welfare, the associated costs and the fundamental conditions applicable".

In addition it proposes laying down a "common basic level of animal welfare" across the EU to ensure fair competition in the single market.

Progress on antibiotics

Parliament welcomes the decline in the use of growth-promoting antibiotics since an EU-wide ban was introduced in 2006 to protect human health.

However, MEPs ask the Commission to investigate the use of animal health products further and to study the growing resistance to antibiotics in animals.

European network for animal welfare

Parliament also backs the idea of a European network for animal welfare, as envisaged in a Commission paper of October 2009.

This could help provide assistance, including training to food chain actors, and facilitate the testing of new techniques.

[The diagnosis of glanders, a zoonotic disease, in Bahrain was
reported by ProMED-mail on 28 Apr 2010. It is encouraging to see this
significant event eventually officially notified to the OIE. There
are several discrepancies between the notification and the
media-derived information dated 17 Apr 2010, in particular the
information about mortality of 2 horses, allegedly triggering the
epidemiological and laboratory investigation, as well as the relevant
timetable (see 20100417.1241).

Glanders is a reportable disease in Kuwait not reportable in Syria.
In both countries, the year of its last occurrence is unknown. Both
countries have already duly submitted their annual reports for 2009
to the OIE, from which the said information is derived. - Mod.AS]

Why dont you take that “astronomical” donation and erect a billboard in EVERY STATE that wants horse-slaughter and let them know you are not going to buy any MEAT products until HR 503 is passed – then you wont have to worry about these never-ending state-by-state battles. Remember, once the first one re-opens in ANY state there will be NO HOPE for our federal bill. Erect a billboard alright,..and boycott of course but use your BIG guns to go after the largest contingency working against our cause, the most powerful weapon we have is our ability to put a BIG dent in their meat sales as they are the main industry holding up our federal bill;

SENASA, Argentina's National Animal and Agriculture Health Board, has
issued a statement suspending all transportation of horses in the Buenos
Aires province for 2 weeks due to an outbreak of viral equine arteritis.

The ban, in force as of this week, may be extended up to 30 days and has
curtailed horse activities such as racing, show jumping, endurance, and
auctions. The origin of the outbreak was traced to semen imported recently
from Holland for jumpers.

The disease affects pregnant mares, which abort their embryos; however,
after being infected, they become immune. Stallions that have viral equine
arteritis must be gelded. The disease can be transmitted through the air or
during breeding.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, equine viral arteritis (EVA) is
an acute, contagious, viral disease of equids caused by equine arteritis
virus. It is characterized by fever, depression, dependent edema
(especially of the limbs, scrotum, and prepuce in the stallion),
conjunctivitis, nasal discharge, abortion and, infrequently, death in young
foals.

The virus which causes EVA was first isolated from horses in Ohio in 1953,
but the disease has afflicted equine animals worldwide for centuries. It
has been more common in some breeds of horses in the United States, but
there is no breed "immunity." There is no known human hazard.

[Equine viral arteritis is caused by equine arteritis virus (EAV), an RNA
virus in the genus _Arterivirus_, family Arteriviridae and order
Nidovirales. Isolates vary in their virulence and potential to induce
abortions. Only one serotype has been recognized. Limited genetic analysis
suggests that EAV strains found among donkeys in South Africa may differ
significantly from isolates in North America and Europe.

Equine arteritis virus is found in the equidae. Antibodies to this virus
have been reported in horses, ponies, donkeys, and zebras. Illness occurs
mainly among horses and ponies, but clinical signs have also been reported
in experimentally infected donkeys. EAV might also be able to cause disease
in South American camelids: polymerase chain reaction assay (PCR) detected
viral nucleic acids in an alpaca that had aborted.

Equine arteritis virus can be transmitted by the respiratory and the
venereal routes. Acutely affected horses excrete the virus in respiratory
secretions; aerosol transmission is common when horses are gathered at
racetracks, sales, shows, and other events. This virus has also been found
in urine and feces during the acute stage. It occurs in the reproductive
tract of acutely infected mares, and both acutely and chronically infected
stallions. In mares, EAV can be found in vaginal and uterine secretions as
well as in the ovary and oviduct for a short period after infection. Mares
infected late in pregnancy may give birth to infected foals. Stallions shed
EAV in semen, and can carry the virus for years. Transmission from
stallions can occur by natural service or artificial insemination. Some
carriers may eventually clear the infection. True carrier states have not
been reported in mares, geldings or sexually immature colts; however, EAV
can occasionally be found for up to 6 months in the reproductive tract of
older prepubertal colts.

Equine arteritis virus can be transmitted on fomites including equipment,
and may be spread mechanically by humans or animals. This virus is
inactivated in 20-30 minutes at 56-58 C (133-136 F), but can remain viable
for 2 to 3 days at 37-38 C (99-100 F) and for up to 75 days at 4-8 C (39-46
F). Semen remains infectious after freezing.

The incubation period varies from 2 days to 2 weeks. Infections transmitted
venereally tend to become apparent in about one week.

Most EAV infections, especially those that occur in mares bred to long-term
carriers, are asymptomatic. The clinical signs are generally more severe in
old or very young animals and in horses that are immunocompromised or in
poor condition. Fulminant infections with severe interstitial pneumonia
and/or enteritis can be seen in foals up to a few months of age. Systemic
illness also occurs in some adults. In adult horses, the clinical signs may
include fever, depression, anorexia, limb edema (particularly in the
hindlimbs), and dependent edema of the prepuce, scrotum, mammary gland
and/or ventral body wall. Conjunctivitis, photophobia, periorbital or
supraorbital edema and rhinitis can also be seen. Some horses develop
urticaria; the hives may be localized to the head or neck, but are
sometimes generalized. Abortions or stillbirths can occur in mares that are
pregnant when they are exposed. Abortions are not necessarily preceded by
systemic signs. Temporary decreases in fertility, including reduced quality
sperm and decreased libido, may be seen in stallions during the acute stage
of the disease. The decrease in sperm quality has been attributed to
increased scrotal temperature and edema, and can persist for up to 4
months. The quality of the semen is not decreased in carrier stallions.
Except in cases of severe disease in foals, deaths are rare.

Equine viral arteritis should be considered when the clinical signs include
fever, depression, edema, conjunctivitis, nasal discharges and abortions.
This disease is difficult to differentiate from other systemic and
respiratory illnesses of horses.

The differential diagnosis includes equine influenza, equine infectious
anemia, and African horse sickness, as well as infections with Getah virus,
Hendra virus, equine rhinitis A and B viruses, equine adenoviruses, and
equine herpesviruses 1 and 4. Equine viral arteritis also resembles purpura
hemorrhagica and other streptococcal infections, as well as poisoning from
the toxic plant _Berteroa incana_ (hoary alyssum).

Acutely infected horses should be isolated to prevent transmission in
secretions and excretions. Precautions should also be taken to avoid
spreading the virus on fomites. EAV is readily inactivated by detergents,
common disinfectants and lipid solvents. No specific treatment is
available; however, most healthy horses other than young foals recover on
their own. Good nursing and symptomatic treatment should be used in severe
cases. Vaccination can also help contain outbreaks.

Venereal transmission can be controlled by good management and vaccination.
To protect pregnant mares from abortion, they should be separated from
other horses and maintained in small groups according to their predicted
foaling dates. Newly acquired horses should be isolated for 3 to 4 weeks.

Vaccination appears to prevent uninfected stallions from becoming long term
carriers. Stallions that are not carriers should be vaccinated before the
start of the breeding season. Prepubertal colts are given the vaccine when
they are 6-12 months old. Carrier stallions are identified and bred only to
well vaccinated or naturally seropositive mares. Similarly, semen that
contains EAV should be used only in these mares. Because 1st time
vaccinates may shed field viruses for a short time after exposure, these
mares should be isolated from seronegative horses, particularly pregnant
mares, for 3 weeks after breeding. Naturally infected mares and those that
are not 1st time vaccinates are isolated for 24-48 hours to protect other
horses from the viruses present in semen.

How to STOP the Pro-Slaughter Movement DEAD in its Tracks & Get Our Federal Bill Passed

I just been sitting here thinking about all the various states lobbying "like the devil" to legalize horse slaugher in their respective states, and pondering on what can be done about it. Of course, they are trying to re-establish horse-slaughter in the US before we can pass our federal bill,...you all remember that, dont you? By the way, what the devil is up with that? Where is all the pressure to get our federal bill passed before these various states legalize horse slaughter that, once established on a state-by-state basis, will effectivily KILL our bill FOREVER! And we are doing what about it except for just waiting and hoping and urging Congress to "do the right thing" and finally pass our bill before the state slaughtering begins? I for one, am not content with waiting and urging and hoping, so I have been wracking my brains of late for a way to stop the pro-slaughterers dead in their tracks by finally and quickly getting our federal bill passed, and I think I have found a way,....but will take a UNITED FRONT like never before but is a relatively simple thing to do.

First we must consider who or what is the driving force behind the push for horse slaughter and there is only one answer for that. Of course there are others, but The DRIVING force is the meat industry. So I got to thinking,...how can we "hit em where it hurts?" Now here comes the "what if."

What if all the anti horse-slaughter folk in the country took a PUBLIC pledge to swear off all kind of meat until Congress passes our bill? Could we use our collective boycott of all meats as as leverage to put pressure on the meat industry to SHUT THE FUK UP about horse slaughter and leave our nations horses alone? Could our collective swearing off of meat hurt them economically? If we could pull it off, would it be enough to throw a scare into them so bad that they would finally allow us to pass our bill? You betcha it would. It would send a very real and clear message to them that if they want to continue in their beef, pork and chicken industries that they had better forget about slaughtering horses and that they HAD BETTER support our bill if they want to continue in their current businesses.

I propose we initiate a Nationwide boycott of all meat products but only UNTIL WHICH TIME

What say the collective voice of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter to that idea? Do we even have a "collective" voice? If not, we had better get one, and fast, against meat. It is our only hope.

While we are at it, we should also include in our boycott against the meat industry, any organization or enterprize that is activily lobbying for horse slaughter. You know who they are, but mainly consist of the horse-racing industry, the breed registries, particularly the AQHA, but most others too, The American Horse Councel and just about everyone of their state Horse Counsel affiliates,....the list goes on and on but these are the main ones. Important to include them as part of the Anti-Horse Slaughter Boycott tarkets.

A major pharmaceutical company has announced an "urgent recall" of all
serial numbers of its West Nile virus vaccine for horses, the American
Veterinary Medical Association [AVMA] announced on its website on Tuesday
[4 May 2010].

The recall, which was voluntary, was instigated by the drug company,
Intervet Schering-Plough, on Monday [3 May 2010], "due to an increased
number of adverse event reports associated with the use of these vaccines,"
the AVMA said.

The pharmaceutical giant has recalled all 1-dose and 5-dose vials of the
PreveNile West Nile virus vaccine for horses. "Schering Plough reported an
increased number of adverse reactions to the vaccine," said Dr Kimberly
May, assistant director of professional and public affairs at the AVMA,
"but unfortunately there were no statements as to severity, or what the
number of horses affected was."

"The word 'urgent' was in the actual letter Schering Plough had sent," Dr
May said, adding, "'Urgent' in the recall world means, 'Check your stock
right now.'"

As of late Tuesday morning [4 May 2010], Intervet Schering-Plough had not
posted a recall notice on its website, or returned a phone message from
ZooToo.com. Dr May noted that it is not unusual for companies not to post
recall information on their websites. But she said the company "has
contacted all the veterinarians affected by this, as well as the distributors."

Intervet informed the USDA and the American Association of Equine
Practitioners on Monday [3 May 2010] of its recall decision.

An adverse event may be anything from swelling at the injection site,
colic, fever, or a host of other negative issues. The letter by Intervet
Schering-Plough did not specify what the adverse reactions were or what
owners and veterinarians should be on the look out for, in the event they
have already administered this vaccine. The letter from the company was
issued on 28 Apr 2010. ProMED-mail would welcome further clarification of
the number and nature of adverse events.

Currently this recall seems to be USA centric but it may be more widespread

Still trying to figger out what the message is here, from the AAEP,........do you think they are trying to tell us something, as in, like, between the lines? Was this article put out in an attempt to rebut our allegations that more American horses are being sent to slaughter than ever before? Are they trying to tell U.S. that America NEEDS horse-slaughter? Now, there is something they been saying for years! Guess the equine vets want their horseslaughter facilities inspection jobs back,...not that they did such a good job of it when they had them. The proof is on our side, thanks to Animal Angels who went undercover and exposed the horrific cruelties they turned a blid eye to,...and, by the way, SugarCreek Auction is Ohio is still operating,even though the USDA "tried" to close them down. I wonder if ole' Leroy Baker ever did pay that $600,000 fine.)

Nine states take sides on the issue

The number of U.S. horses slaughtered in North America has dropped nearly 40 percent since its peak in 2007—the last year horses were processed in the United States after a federal district court ordered the Department of Agriculture to stop inspecting horse slaughter facilities.

According to the USDA's latest figures, released in March, 88,276 horses were slaughtered in North America during 2009—a decrease of 38 percent from the decade high of 140,911 horses processed in 2007.

From 2001-2009, the mean number of horses slaughtered each year was 97,954. So while this past year's total is below average, the number of horses slaughtered in Mexico and Canada is historically high, making up for the lack of production in the United States.

This divisive issue continues to inspire legislative actions on both sides of debate, which is being played out at the state and federal levels.

The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act—H.R. 503/S. 727—is still pending in Congress. It would prevent any horse slaughter facility from operating in the United States as well as prohibit the shipment of horses to other countries for processing.

As of mid-April, three states—Idaho, Wyoming, and South Dakota—had adopted bills or resolutions relating to this issue while six other states continued to consider their own pro- or anti-horse-slaughter legislation. Tara Southwell, state policy analyst in the AVMA State Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Department, compiled a list of these measures. They are as follows:

California
California Joint Resolution 22 would petition Congress to support federal legislation to protect American horses from slaughter for human consumption. This resolution was adopted in the California Senate and is pending in the House.

Florida
Florida H.B. 765 and S.B. 1708 would make it a felony to knowingly transport, distribute, sell, purchase, or possess horse meat for human consumption that is not clearly stamped, marked, and described as horse meat for human consumption, or horse meat that is not acquired from a licensed slaughterhouse. These bills are pending in the Florida Senate.

Idaho
Idaho S.B. 1316 amends existing animal cruelty laws to provide that specified laws should not be construed as interfering with the humane slaughter of equids. This bill has been signed by the governor.

Idaho Joint Resolution 104 would urge Congress to oppose federal legislation that interferes with a state's ability to direct the transport and processing of horses. Wyoming
Wyoming H.B. 122 provides that livestock and feral livestock, including horses, may be sent to slaughter as an alternative to taking animals to auction. The meat is to be sold to a state institution or to nonprofit organizations for no more than the board's cost for disposal, processing, and delivery, and to for-profit entities at the market rate of processed meat.
