Campaign to Shut Down San Bernabe

INTERNATIONAL PETITION to CLOSE DOWN the MOST HORRIFIC SLAUGHTER AUCTION IN MEXICO

by Annie Mond on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11:30pm.

You can find information on the San Bernabe animal auction and the animal suffering at http://www.facebook.com/mercadodesanbernabe and the Youtube video, enclosed.

The enclosed link to the petition

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/3/por-la-clausura-del-mercado-de-san-bernab/

is about a slaughter auction in Mexico with many horses and donkeys at the auction...the pictures in the video are horrible. They are hoping an international petition will put more pressure on the government to close this horribly cruel auction. Please help and sign their petition. Some of these horses may come from the US.

Elizabeth Forel Mar 12 08:00PM -0500

This is an International Petition to shut down this very cruel Mexican slaughter facility.

The San Bernabe auction is a source of violence that has permeated not only

other animal auctions of the State of Mexico but also most of the MexicanRepublic.

It is the largest animal auction in Mexico. It is the central dissemination point of

sale for slaughter animals.

■TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Since October of 2007 and through multiple witness reports, television and

newspaper headlines, animal protection groups of Mexico have been alerting

the Mexican community of the terrible animal abuse and extremely poor

sanitary conditions at the San Bernabe animal auction in Mexico (Mercado de

San Bernabe). The San Bernabe auction is located in the Almoloya de Juarez

municipality, about 100 kilometers west of Mexico City. Here, an environment

of violence and impunity persists before the eyes of the Governor of the

State of Mexico, *Enrique Peña Nieto*. The local authorities with

jurisdiction over the auction, in spite of having full power to inspect

operations, enforce humane regulations, and impose sanctions on the numerous

extreme violations have thus far been totally apathetic. Regulations aimed

at providing a somewhat sane level of humane animal treatment and sanction

the extreme brutality currently exist but have never been enforced. Therefore,

in effect, extreme animal cruelty persists unchecked without reprieve or recourse

at the San Bernabe auction.

Domestic animals as well as wildlife are sold every Monday at the auction

with the majority of domestic animals being horses and donkeys. Many animals

are of unclear origin and visibly sick, although suspected starting point

for most are states in central and northern Mexico, with some horses

traveling from locations as far north as the United States. They travel

thousands of miles to the San Bernabe auction to either be sold for various

domestic uses as live animals or butchered in clandestine slaughterhouses

throughout Mexico for their meat. It is possible that some of these horses

are ultimately sold to state slaughterhouses in Zacatecas and Aguascalientes

where they are processed and their meat is exported to markets overseas.

Horses and donkeys arrive at the auction in appalling condition.* *Those

that arrive alive are sadistically dragged out of the trucks despite

exposed fractures, bleeding open wounds and sores observed on

some of them. Horses are often suspended with ropes along truck

walls as they are too weak to remain standing. These so-called

"disposable animals" are kept alive because the price of a kilo of living meat is

$20.00 pesos, or about $2 USD, which is almost twice the price for a kilo of dead

meat. When the agony finally ends and an animal dies, it is immediately cut open

and its viscera is thrown to the ground where it remains without prompt subsequent

removal. Even more alarming is the disposal of animal entrails and blood in the

nearby Lerma River which creates a* *serious environmental and health threat.

The beatings, kicking, and use of electric cattle prods on the animals at

the auction are constant. Terrified and panicking donkeys and mules

regularly beaten to death.

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxukvLG4f1I&feature=searc

* PETITION: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/3/por-la-clausura-del-mercado-de-san-bernab/

FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/mercadodesanbernabe

We believe that it is mandatory to comply with Mexican federal and state

legislation regarding animal health and humane treatment, wildlife and

environmental preservation issues. An animal auction like San Bernabe with

no adequate health standards and with such pervading intense brutality must

be regularly inspected and adequate sanctions imposed without excuses to

overlook these severe violations.

The Governor of the State of Mexico, *Enrique Peña Nieto*, in coordination

with the City Council of Almoloya de Juarez and all other regulatory

entities with jurisdiction over the San Bernabe auction must assert their

authority and, for the sake of the physical and mental health of the

community, enforce the Federal Law of Animal Health; General Law of Wild

Animals; Law for the Environmental Balance; Biodiversity Code of the State

of Mexico; and the Mexican official regulations concerning the sale,

transport and handling of working and slaughter animals. They must also

sanction the numerous blatant violations occurring at the auction.

State and municipal governments are fully responsible for enforcing existing

regulations. For example, the Biodiversity Code of the State of Mexico,

stipulates the obligation of the municipalities, the Ministry of Health and

the State Environmental Ministry to immediately ensure proper care of the

animals and shut down animal auctions where cruelty or abuse take place, and

the life or safety of animals is at risk. Concerned Mexican citizens have

repeatedly asked Governor *Enrique Peña Nieto* for the enforcement of

existing laws as well as the implementation of a strong animal rights and

welfare educational campaign among the San Bernabe animal auction traders

and animal owners. Unfortunately, the Governor has thus far ignored all

urgent requests and pleas by citizens mainly because animal cruelty,

politically speaking, is not an important matter on his agenda.

The San Bernabe auction is a source of violence that has permeated not only

other animal auctions of the State of Mexico but also most of the Mexican

Republic. It is the largest animal auction in Mexico. It is the central

dissemination point of sale for slaughter animals.* *Here a Dantean scenario

of cruelty and filth rules undeterred where existing laws are not enforced

and supervision of auction operations, animal treatment or sanitary practices,

is nonexistent. The San Bernabe auction in Almoloya de Juarez makes

a mockery of humanity and is one of the most shameful examples of

animal brutality and ill health in Mexico. We have fought alone for a long

time and are now reaching out to the international community to please help us

make a change for San Barnabe’s animals. Their suffering is immense.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Name of the group that is sending this letter

HorseMeat on The Menu at 1st Annual Summit of the Horse?

If Sue Wallis and Friends had their way, it would! Below is a message being sent round today to her Pro-Slaughter Constituants, from The Horse-Slaughter Queen herself;

Hello Suscribers,

For today's Summit of the Horse blog we are sharing a reprint of an article written by Dan Pandolfo, a horse breeder and cattle rancher from Northgate, Sask., who says eating horse meat is more respectful than waste or abuse. This was originally published in the Western Producer on September 23, 2010.

There are many perspectives on the problems in the horse industry today. Dan shares one that many of us share.

Our hope is to bring all of the various perspectives together at the Summit of the Horse in Las Vegas to discuss calmly and rationally what needs to be done to restore the horse industry. We will not tolerate protests and obstruction, but if you come to the table with respect and decorum, you will be welcomed. I hope that you can join us!

Sue Wallis, Vice President
United Horsemen

Article;

Available horse meat a modern reality

I am a Saskatchewan horse breeder and cattle rancher. I read your Aug. 26 article ( "Horse breeding industry faces crisis") with interest and an open mind, and I feel compelled to give a different perspective.

In regard to Betty Coulthard's problems and the emotions spawned by the reality of product demand, I agree that it is difficult to see young horses go to slaughter plants.

However, I feel the same way about a pen of nice fat steers or heifers or a favourite productive cow that has spent her time on earth doing what she was meant to do - turning the earth's grasses and grains into life-sustaining protein.

After all, the relationship between mankind and forage-consuming animals has existed for well over 1,000 years.

Ms. Coulthard's perspective could be suspect to a lot of breeders and horse owners and potential new industry players. Making a statement such as " you have to raise 100 horses to get two good ones" is self-defeating when it comes to getting the public and horse enthusiasts to spend hard-earned dollars on the product of a specific breeding program.

In my program, I think if I raise one poor animal in 10, then I need to correct the problem as quickly as possible. In fact, I have a sales production program that includes a guarantee of a horse's quality, given proper care and animal husbandry is in place in the prospective customer's facility.

The truth about the price of horses is multifaceted. Part of it relates to the PMU industry.Canadian PMU producers were persuaded by the buyer of their product to produce papered stock to eliminate the impression that they were raising horses destined for human consumption. Producers complied.

Supply and demand set the price on the horses, and producers had to sell them to the pleasure and performance horse industry to comply with their contract holder and their own association. The result: a massive number of papered horses of varying quality. It created a glut on the market.

Producing high quality sport horses is a tough game to play. Even the best bred prospects sometimes do not work out as well as intended.

This has left a sour taste in the mouths of many people who invested in PMU bred horses. A number of these horses work out well but a greater number prove to be a poor investment.

Good horses still bring good money. The same is true of all top quality products. And yes, it's true that the market does not bear as much fruit as it did 10 years ago. We are in recession and everyone is included, horse breeders and users alike.

At this time in our history, horses are a luxury. Supply and demand are the dominant factors in this world and probably always will be.

North Americans are foolish and wasteful. Apparently we are so rich that we can, because of an emotional misconception, afford to throw away one of the highest quality red meat sources in the world.

Horse meat is lower in fat and cholesterol than beef or bison. It has higher protein per gram and is also rich in trace elements.

In our culture, obesity is running rampant, causing all kinds of expensive and damaging health issues. Yet we think eating horse meat is a sin, while the rest of the world consumes more than four million horses per year and has lower obesity rates.

This is a ridiculous situation. We have people in our own country who struggle to feed their families a good balanced diet. At the same time we sell our horses to a few fully integrated horse meat market retailers for a fraction of what they are worth on the world market.

I have been told that a 1,200 pound horse, when processed, retails for an average of $ 2,750 per animal. If you figure a yield of 65 percent on the rail, the meat is worth $3.52 per lb.

I have also heard that in some European and Asian regions, the best cuts can sell for up to $40 per lb. Of course, those would be fed horses for a specific market but it nevertheless appears that horse meat is worth a premium to beef in a lot of countries.

We see horses sold in this country for a measly 20 to 40 cents per lb., all because there is no domestic demand.

Yet 4.6 million horses are consumed by humans every year in other countries and cultures. Are we to assume these cultures are ethically corrupt, uncivilized or less intelligent than North Americans are?

The animal rights people have been successful in shutting down the slaughter horse industry in the United States, making U.S. slaughter horses worthless. Integrated retailers are able to buy American horses for the cost of assembly and trucking.

It seems unbelievable, but the anti-slaughter groups and animal rights people are crushing the taxable economic activity of the horse industry. At the same time they are enabling the horse slaughter monopolies in Canada and Mexico to make bigger profits than ever.

Using horses to sustain human life is far more respectful of these animals than to let them starve or put them down and waste their remains.

Bloggers Note: The asshole author said ONE thing right. The PMU Industry plays a HUGE part in the production of so many "un-wanted" horses.

Politicians: Should We Care if We Piss Them Off?

There is an old argument rearing its head again in the anti-horse slaughter camp. Once again we are finding ourselves facing a critical time in the battle to get HR 503 (the anti-horse slaughter bill) passed, as Congress is getting ready to end this session in a couple of weeks, we are anxious to get our bill put up for a vote before it ends. The Action Alerts have been furiously flying about all across the internet, urging the advocates to bombard our legislators & The Speaker of the House with phone calls, emails, faxes and letters, asking them to help get HR 503 up for a vote right away. As usual, the dedicated advocates from all over the world responded to the call and commenced upon a vigorous emailing, faxing and telephone calling campaign. Just as its effects were beginning to take effect, word starts going round that some one or two of the advocates are complaining that we should not be "bothering" the speaker of the house and/or certain other named politicos, and likening our actions to "harassment" and accusing us of pissing the politicians off. They say that we are causing problems in their offices, jamming up fax machines and tying up telephone lines, and I have no doubt that it is true. ! In some cases, they have actually had to set up new telephone numbers and lines, just to handle all our calls!
Further evidence of the great work that we do when we all put our heads together for one purpose and one goal. So I cant understand whats up with those who are saying "dont bother this one" or "dont bother that one" crap? Have they totally lost their minds?

Who and/or what are they trying to protect? Some are even alleging that our "bothering" certain of the politicians and/or our "pissing them off" is COSTING us their support, thinking ("they" say) that we are a bunch of crazies and wackos that they dont want nothing to do with, and, it is further alleged, that by losing their support, we are COSTING the lives of more horses! Now what do we make of that POV?

In view of the conflicting messages, the advocates are now confused, and who can blame them? They see such conflicting messages as a division in our leadership. But the truth of the matter is that there can be no division of leadership simply because the anti-horse slaughter folk HAVE no real leadership or organization as a whole. There is no one individual, or group of individuals, nor any PACs or organization on a national level that could lay any legitimate claim to a leadership role for the movement as a whole. In any event, we are much too diverse a group as a whole to have any one person or org that could ever represent us all with our varying and diverse views. Yes we all want the same things: an end to horse-slaughter and an end to the BLMs cruel round-ups & proper management of our American Herds, but we all have different ideas on the best strategies to utilize in going about accomplishing these goals. There are those that go out into the streets and protest. There are those of us who would never do such a thing. There are those of us that write petitions and there are those of us who never sign. There are those of us who travel DC at every possible opportunity to talk to the politicians and advocate on the horses behalf. Then there are those that cant travel but wish they could. They will stay home and write letters, make calls, and send out faxes to have their own point of views and ideas heard. The anti-horse slaughter movement has ALWAYS been a collective effort embarked upon by the various individuals and groups as well as organizations, drawn of people from across all walks of life. No one person or org was ever or could ever claim to be a "leader," a "spearhead" or a "spokesperson" for us all, even those who have been "in the fight" the longest, or even those with "boots on the ground" or "in the trenches." All have their own ideas of just what are the best solutions or the best ways to go about effecting them. That is not to say that such diversion is a bad thing, in fact, generally, such diversion works to the betterment of the campaign on the whole, as it helps to foster discussion and debate which helps formulate new ideas. However, when that diversion causes confusion among the advocates and they dont know what to do, it is not a good thing. Everything comes to a standstill and it only adds to their exasperation and discouragement. That is why I feel this is an important issue to discuss at this time.

First off, let me express straight out my own personal feelings on the matter, and it is as simple as this; I do not think we should worry in the least little bit about pissing the politicos off, ANY of them,....and here's why: Our ability to anger or to frustrate them is the most powerful tool we have!

There are two kinds of ways to wage a war and/or work for change, and BOTH play an equally important role. There is the "polite" way and then there is the "not so" polite way (shall we say "the angry, mad or crazy" way?) Lets do. But to put it more succinctly,...there is "ask" and then there is "demand."

Those fighting the "polite" way I call "the negotiators." They meet with the big-whigs in Washington and have to be nice and prim and proper and mind their manners when they are begging and pleading and trying to reason with them. They never cuss or show their anger as they ask for consideration, and they almost never DEMAND the change they are seeking to effect, at least not in any sort of an angry, threatening or intimidating way." In law, we call this "Snots and Bugars" pleading. Now dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this kind of campaigning, and is definitely needed if we are ever to realize our goals. Yes ANY movement needs "polite negotiators," but the "uncontrollable crazies" are also needed as well. Indeed these are the sort of warriors that the politicos are afraid of the most, simply because we are un-controlable, and if the "polite" warriors were smart, instead of attempting to silence us or dis-associate themselves from us, they should be using our collective craziness and anger as a bargaining chip or a leverage tool when going about hob-nobbing in the halls of Congress looking to get support for our bill. Bottom line is, there really is no controlling us and I think this is something that the polite warriors need to let the politicians know. What they need to be reminding them is that, if our emailing and calling campaigns are bothering them,....they themselves (the politicians, that is) can either (1) give us what we want or (2) issue a statement to us that they have heard our concerns and let us know what they intend to do (or not do) about it. If indeed we are "bothering" any of them, it should be they that let us know, not our fellow advocates. If it is true that "bothering" or "angering" the politicians is costing the movement support in the halls of congress, then so be it, but I doubt that this is true. If a politician supports our cause, he will not abandon it simply due to a few "crazies." On the other hand, if a politician does not want to support us but is afraid to come right out and say it, well there is a handy excuse for them to disassociate themselves from us. It is a convenient excuse for them, but we shouldnt let such things deter us from the mission at hand,..which is to BOMBARD the Politicios, EVERY ONE OF THEM,... consistantly,...with our pleas and demands.

I have always been of the mind that we should use every weapon available to us in any war that we are serious about winning . If we stuck to fighting only in a "polite" way, asking and pleading and trying to reason with them, all the while NOT wanting to or scared to "piss anybody off," then we are not using EVERY weapon available to us, and most certainly not our most powerful and effective ones. Anger is a gift and should be utilized in the most effective way, not suppressed. The most effective way to use our anger I think, would be to direct it toward those who are in the best position to bring about the change we are asking for, ...and that is clearly the politicians....so why hold back on anything? Why not "give it all we got?" Bombs away, I say. Upon each and every one of them. Spare NO ONE..not Pelosi, or Conyers, or Moran, no one with the power to give us what we want should be left out. NOW is the time to TURN UP the heat on everyone. Bombs away, I say! Hit 'em all! They WILL hear what you have to say. Dont let anybody misguide you or intimidate you into "lightning up" on any one of them.

AMERICAN HORSES ARE BEING TORTURED IN SLAUGHTER HOUSES IN CANADA AND MEXICO. IT WILL NEVER STOP. IT WILL NOT STOP UNTIL H.R.503 IS PASSED IN CONGRESS.....16 PEOPLE HOLD THE POWER TO MAKE IT STOP..WILL YOU CALL THEM PLEASE...IF THIS BILL IS NOT PASSED BY DECEMBER 9, HORSES WILL BE TRANSPORTED ACROSS OUR BORDERS TO DIE AGONIZING DEATHS - SHOT IN THEIR EYES, STABBED IN THE SPINE, IT WILL CONTINUE - THROUGHOUT ALL ETERNITY IF H.R. 503 IS NOT PASSED.......CALL OR FAX THESE 16 FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVES NOW.....ASK THEM TO PLEASE VOTE YES ON H.R.503 IMMEDIATELY.

Euro-MPs Urge Tightning of Animal Welfare Rules

11 May 2010

More frequent inspections and tougher penalties will be needed to enforce the next EU Animal Welfare Action Plan, says a resolution adopted by the European Parliament last week.
The current 2006-10 plan has worked well, in particular the measures taken to reduce harmful antibiotics in animal feed, but there is still room for improvement, say MEPs.

A high level of animal welfare, from breeding to slaughter, can improve product safety and quality, to the benefit of all EU consumers, argues Parliament, and welfare requirements should be mainstreamed into all relevant EU policies.

The resolution, drafted by Marit Paulsen (Sweden) and approved by show of hands, reviews the European Commission's action plan for animal welfare for 2006-2010 and suggests improvements for the next plan.

First and foremost, Parliament emphasises the need to enforce properly the existing rules, such as the ban on battery cages for hens and the rules on the protection of pigs and the transport of geese and ducks.

Imports to comply with EU standards

EU budget funding is needed to enable the Commission to monitor implementation of the law. MEPs add that animal products imported into the EU, such as meat, must also comply with welfare requirements.

For the future, MEPs call on the EU executive to propose general animal welfare legislation "to achieve a common understanding of the concept of animal welfare, the associated costs and the fundamental conditions applicable".

In addition it proposes laying down a "common basic level of animal welfare" across the EU to ensure fair competition in the single market.

Progress on antibiotics

Parliament welcomes the decline in the use of growth-promoting antibiotics since an EU-wide ban was introduced in 2006 to protect human health.

However, MEPs ask the Commission to investigate the use of animal health products further and to study the growing resistance to antibiotics in animals.

European network for animal welfare

Parliament also backs the idea of a European network for animal welfare, as envisaged in a Commission paper of October 2009.

This could help provide assistance, including training to food chain actors, and facilitate the testing of new techniques.

Slaughterhouse Sue & The Bloody Ranch-Hand Band

Listen as Slaughterhouse Sue and her Band of Bloody Ranch-Hands sing old and new songs to Kill Yer' Hosses' by.....
Click on album cover to enlarge
Sue is a politician from Wyoming that is spearheading the movement to bring horse-slaugher back into the US. Her and her Bloodthirsty "Slaughterhouse-Happy" gang are claiming that since the horse slaughterhouses in the US closed they have no way to "dispose" of their unwanted horses anymore
and she is obviously

Of course she knows it is a lie. She is a breeder of Quarter-horses who only wants into the horsemeat business for the money she and her state can make. Of couse she knows we are still sending horses to slaugher in greater numbers then before, but they are going to foreign plants in Canada and Mexico, also, there are PLENTY of local places for unscruplous uncaring horse owners in Wyoming to "dispose" of their unwanted horses, but they dont like to talk about that much at all;

Anyone in Wyoming looking to dump an "unwanted" horse (and get paid for it too)

can dump them off at one of these meat-market auction houses. If you cant truck em there yourself chances are the auction house will pick them up for you or help you to arrange trucking;

My Pro-Slaughter Letter 2 ObombA That Sue Wallis Asked Me 2 Send

Sent today alright, but not before making some needed revisions

April 17, 2010

Dear President Obama,
Dear Representative Murphy,
Dear Senator Schumer,
Dear Senator Gillibrand,

DO NOT BELIEVE Sue Wallis' and Ed Butchers Pro-Horse Slaughter Hype in the "WHEREASSES" paragraphs below. - They wrote this letter they are asking their pro-slaughter friends to just sign and send, but I DONT AGREEE with a word they said in this letter. I am signing it anyways to REBUT the lies. Check out my comments in the very last paragraph of this letter, to get to the heart of the matter quickly and find the TRUTH behind the pro-slaughter lies, for the TRUTH stands TALLER and TOWERS OVER, shadowing out and erasing the BOLDFACE pro-horse slaughter lies, ....."for real." The TRUTH will set you and me and U.S. and even THEM free!

TRUTH OUT HERE - TRUTH OUT NOW - TRUTH, BABY, TRUTH

WHEREAS, pending legislation would criminalize the processing of horses for food and provide for a three year prison term and a fine for anyone selling or providing transport for horses sold for food;

WHEREAS it has been documented that a ban on horse meat leads to an increase in the abandonment and neglect of unwanted horses.

WHEREAS prices for all horses have dropped due to increased numbers of unwanted horses that people can no longer afford to maintain.

WHEREAS being able to market otherwise unmarketable surplus horses for
meat benefits the farm and ranch economy as well as the tribal economy.

WHEREAS the existence of a market for horse meat increases the value of riding and pleasure horses by decreasing the surplus number of horses.

WHEREAS excess feral horses on federal, state, tribal and private lands are far in excess of the carrying capacity of the land, which in turn impacts other resources including forage for wildlife and livestock, cover for wildlife, native cultural food plants and medicines and the fishery resource.

WHEREAS a market for horse meat for human, pet, and zoo carnivore food provides local and regional jurisdictions a cost effective and humane method of dealing with abandoned and feral horses without undue taxpayer expense;

WHEREAS a horse meat market and humane processing options underpin the entire equine economy, provide a viable market for lower end horses, as well as supporting the value of all horses;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the members and supporters of the United Organizations of the Horse, strongly urge our Congressional delegations to oppose passage of any law that criminalizes the use of horses for food or for export.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we strongly urge Congress to remove any and all impediments to the transportation, marketing, processing, exporting of horses; and to work diligently to restore USDA/FSIS regulated and inspected humane processing facilities for horses in the United States.

*****
YOU PRO-HORSE SLAUGHTERERS MAKE ME SICK! You keep throwing around the phrase "humane slaughter" when surley you know in your own minds (and hearts. if you have one) and also- being in the cattle killing business as well, that there is NO SUCH THING as "humane slaughter." Slaughter by its very nature is a freightning, highly tramatic and painful experience for any animal.....you show U.S. (if you can) any horse being "humanely slaughtered," and I will kiss your fatted naked ass in front of the big white house at 1600 Pennsylvania Av in Washington DC,....in broad daylight with the press there and in full view of your pro-slaughter friends and constituants. There is always a high degree of upset, fear, the smell of blood, the noise, the screams, the captive bolt gun that fails to stun more often than not, the hangin upside down and bleeding, and the skinning alive of some of them. There is NOTHING humane in this scenario. There is only ONE WAY to humanely end an animals life (yes, ANY animal) and that is by injection done on site at the farm under the supervision of a vet, with the consciencious owner at the horses side, "loving on it" til the very end, reassuring it that it is loved and telling it that everything will be ok, that the suffering will soon end. This system is called Humane euthansia FOR A REASON (meaning a "good death" w/out trauma or pain, in other words, A PEACEFUL death! When have you ever seen a slaughtered animal go to his death or die in peace? There is no better way to put a horse down humanely, other than by injection. They just "go to sleep." Slaughter IS NOT humane and it most certainly is not euthansia - the good death, remember. Isnt that how you would want to go, by "good death" and not the "bad" that is slaughter,.. if you were FORCED to go before your time simply because someone wanted to eat you. Think about it Sue,...if you had a choice between the two, which way would YOU want to go? I think the answer is obvious but then again, there is none so blind as those who refuse to see "beyond the dollar signs" in their eyes. You pro-slaughters are only kidding yourselves. You must think Americans are stoopid if you think they are going to believe you want to slaugter horses for their own good. Ray Charles could see through that BS cause it STINKS to the high heaven....a place GOD KNOWS you will never go,....for your lack of human compassion for every living thing, and for putting "self" before rightousness. SlaughterHouse Sue, you SUCK BIG TIME as a human being, and even worse as a woman. There is an old saying that goes: "The only thing WORSE than a cold-hearted bloodthirsty man is a cold-hearted bloodthirsty woman." So you wanna be like a man? Grow some sacks w/ lots of hair and quit deleting my comments off of your pro-slaughter sites. What are you afraid of? Am I making too much sense? Who could say in all honesty that what I am saying is wrong? Naw, there is no if, ands or buts about it. Slaughtering non-food animals such as horses (or dogs and cats and hampsters, guinea pigs, etc.) is wrong, at least in this country it is, that is, at least for now, until and if ever you guys get your way. After that, I guess anything goes. God Help the United States (of Corporate America) who has stolen the voice of the common-folk causes.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Christine Jubic

GAO to Study Horse Slaughter Closure

U.S. Government to Study Impact of Horse Slaughter Industry Closure
A new law upholds the ban on American horse slaughter and orders an examination of horse welfare.

October 29, 2009

The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) will soon be studying the impact of the closure of American equine slaughterhouses. The last American slaughterhouse was closed in 2007.

On October 21, the president signed the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R.2997). The primary purpose of the bill is to designate funding for The United States Department of Agriculture and related organizations. The bill, now Public Law 111-80, contains some important points related to horse welfare.

Section 744 continues the prohibition of USDA spending on inspection of horsemeat in the United States. Though there are currently no equine slaughterhouses in the country, this provision would apply if a company moves forward on constructing a new slaughter plant. When American slaughterhouses were operational, the primary market for the product was in parts of Europe and Japan, where horsemeat is an ingredient in some local specialty dishes.

Earlier this year, a Montana law sponsored by Republican Representative Ed Butcher cleared the way for the construction of an equine slaughterhouse in that state. He is currently seeking Chinese investors to operate the facility, though it is uncertain how the meat will be sold legally without USDA inspection as that inspection is required of all meat produced in the United States, regardless of where it is sold.

Furthermore, new European Union laws require any horse sold for human consumption to be identified as "intended for slaughter." This means they must not have been treated with any chemicals, such as dewormers or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or undergo a 180-day quarantine. The new EU law is expected to impact the market for American horses as meat animals.

One of the primary arguments of the pro-slaughter movement is that the closure of horse slaughter plants in the United States has directly contributed toward increased neglect and abandonment of American horses. A senate report accompanying H.R. 2997 directs the GAO to conduct a study on the current state of horse welfare in America as it relates to the end of the domestic slaughter industry. The study will specifically examine how horse welfare, horse rescue organizations, farm industry income, and overall horse sales, imports and exports have been affected by the slaughterhouse closures.

Results of this study are expected by March of 2010.

The Alabama Farmers Federation Equine Producers Division Works to Bring Back Horse Slaughter in USA

Composed of horse "producers" and owners from throughout the state, the Equine Division represents these "producers" on a national, state and local level with committees in more than 40 Alabama counties.

Equine producers and owners who make up these committees come together at the local level and develop policies and program ideas to address their needs and concerns. Those policies are then discussed at the state level and may be transformed into state and national initiatives by the organization

Nebraska State lawmakers want to resolve horse dilemma - Suggest Native Americans Get Into Horse-Slaughter Business

By ART HOVEY / Lincoln Journal Star | Posted: Friday, October 2, 2009 1:25 pm | 1 Comment

It's far from the only situation of its kind in the state, but it's a serious one for Fillmore County.

Five of the 35 emaciated horses Sheriff Bill Burgess and his deputies confiscated from property near Shickley in July have died.

County officials already have spent almost $7,500 keeping the rest alive and will need to find a heated building for at least seven of them soon if they expect them to survive chillier temperatures.

Deputy Sheriff Bob Hester, who's supervising the county's care-taking efforts, doesn't like what he's seeing happen to horses there and elsewhere in the state.

In an earlier era, "they helped us to develop and settle this area," he said. "And, unfortunately, animals can't speak for themselves. We have to speak for them and protect them."

Humane treatment was certainly one concern for members of the Legislature's Agriculture Committee Friday as they tried to come up with a solution to the increasing numbers of horses in the state that are falling into the neglected, unwanted and abandoned categories.

But lawmakers are also trying to come to grips with the aftermath of a 2006 federal decision that led to the closing of the last three horse slaughtering plants in the United States and with the emotional debate over whether horses should be treated as livestock or companion animals.

"Death is not inhumane. Starvation and neglect are," Gretna veterinarian Larry Henning said as he testified on behalf of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association and in favor of what he described as "humane transport to slaughter."

That point of view - whether the slaughtering is done in the U.S., Mexico or somewhere else - does not pass muster with the Humane Society of the United States, said Don Wesely, spokesman for its almost 50,000 members in Nebraska.

Wesely, a former state senator and mayor of Lincoln, called horse slaughter "cruel and inhumane" and said, "We should be able to find common ground here short of having to slaughter horses in the state of Nebraska."

Sen. M.L. "Cap" Dierks, a committee member and a veteran veterinarian from Ewing, is heading up efforts to find solutions through an interim study. And, as is often the case, interim studies arise from problems that are too complicated to solve quickly.

As the long-standing U.S. practice of exporting horse meat is stymied by federal lawmakers, Nebraska rendering plants have become overloaded with horses that grow old and die in the pasture instead.

Many plants won't pick up any more carcasses or have begun charging hundreds of dollars to come and get them.

"Right now," said Dierks, "the only place I can take a horse to dispose of him is I take him to the pasture. I dig a hole and I shoot him."

At the same time, the typical cost of caring for one horse for one year can easily add up to $1,900 a year, said Debby Brehm, speaking for Nebraska members of the American Quarter Horse Association.

"Whether or not we want to admit it," Brehm said, "the economy comes into play."

Brehm said her organization does not advocate slaughtering horses, but she described it as "a necessary aspect of the equine industry." She also said "transportation should be allowed to existing facilities."

Ross Garwood, Amelia farmer and spokesman for the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation, said Nebraska should look at various options to what amounts to a slaughtering ban, including consulting with Native Americans about doing it on tribal land.

Tribes are not subject to federal restrictions, he said, and there is "a potential epidemic of unwanted and abandoned horses."

Back in Fillmore County, Deputy Hester said the 30 surviving horses there appear to be on the mend from what had been "walking skeleton" status. "The thing is they're so depressed that it will take time to get them back up."

Thayer County resident Norman Graves is behind bars in Lincoln as he awaits an Oct. 7 hearing in Geneva on animal cruelty charges.

"Galloping" to the Rescue w/ a Gallup Poll

So we have been telling our representatives in Congress that most Americans are against horse slaughter,....but what have we to prove to them that what we are saying is true? And with so many organizations against us with so much lobbying power in DC - isnt it time for us to actually PROVE to them with cold-hard facts that what we are saying is true..... how then, can they continue to ignore us, "the will of the people?" Isnt it time for a Gallup poll? I wonder.....could we compel them to do it and if so, how much would it cost?

Click on title above to go to the Gallup Poll site; Maybe if they got enough emails from us they would consider doing an "American Horse Slaughter" poll - maybe they will do it for free? Doesnt hurt to ask.

Update: I received an email from an anti-horse slaughter advocate who thinks taking a National poll at this time would be risky for our cause. Her concern was that with all the pro-slaughter propaganda floating around, that people will believe the hype and come out on the pro-slaughter side. I am thinking, based on my own experiences with talking to people on the streets about it (while handing out flyers) that most people arent even aware that American horses are being slaughtered for human consumption abroad, and when they find out they are appalled and are definately against it "like eating our cats or dogs" they likein it. These "clean slate" minds outnumber by far, I am sure, the ones that have been tained by the pro-slaughter propaganda and who have already made up their minds. I think NOW is the time for a reliable National poll. What say you?

World Horse Welfare Submits Petition to EU Commission

2009 October 6

World Horse Welfare has handed its petition to the European Commission calling for the end of the long-distance transportation of horses to slaughter.

More than 130,000 people in Britain and the Continent supported the Make A Noise petition, which was handed in to the EU in Brussels on 30 September.

Currently, 100,000 horses are transported long-distance across Europe to slaughter every year in inhumane conditions, causing exhaustion, dehydration, injury and stress.

The charity’s director of campaigns and communications Jo White said: “The demonstration of public support for this campaign has been overwhelming.

“It’s an issue that people are very passionate about, mainly because it’s a totally unnecessary cause of suffering on a huge scale.

“Every time we undertake a field trip to gather evidence and monitor the practice, we witness many incidents of pain and distress — which must and can be stopped.

“Hopefully, the petition will be the catalyst for change. The regulation urgently needs to be amended if welfare is to improve.”

Proof Positive Horse Slaughter Causes Cruelty, Neglect & Abuse

A Scathing Report from USDAs own files that should make clear to anyone with half-a-brain that the "equine slaughter pipleine" causes cruelty, neglect & abuse and/or perpetuates it BIG time.

Take a look at some of the 288 pages and pictures in this latest report in the link below, straight from the USDAs own records, thanks to a Freedom-of-Information Law Request (FOIL) by the wonderful folk at Animal Angels. There are dozens and dozens of pics documenting the cruelty, neglect & abuses of horse slaughter transport and feedlot and auction house cruelty. BE WARNED these are some of the most vivid & graphic pics of equine cxruelty you will ever see. Its shows horses with gaping cuts and wounds, some with their eyeball hanging out or no eye, some being forced to walk and/or stand on broken legs and twisted ankles and hooves, and some with no legs or feet at all.

Click link below to see Report;
http://www.freewebs.com/equinecrusaders/crueltyreport.htm

The owners of these horses or the people responsible for their care should (have been or) be arrested. No animal should be made to suffer like this, for ANY reason, and the transport and the slaughter are NEVER humane.

Equine slaughter is a completely un-necessary evil and should be BANNED in this country IMMEDIATELY and the export of our American horses to other countries for human consumption must cease. Funny thing that, as Americans, we dont eat horses for moral or ethical reasons, but still, we have the "proud" distinction of being the WORLDS LARGEST exporter of horses for human consumption in other countries! How contradictory in terms is that? We dont eat horses but yet we are "ok" with sending them off to horrendous slaughter for other people to eat? If we are ok with feeding our nations horses to foreign countries, why not export our cats and our dogs over to Asia, China, Korea, Thailand, etc. There is a BIG market for their meat over there. Think of the money to be made! See how rediclous the notion is? Americans dont eat our cats or dogs or horses and therefore we shouldnt be ok with exporting them for foreigners to consume.

When people ask me what is the difference between slaughtering a horse or a cow or a sheep or a pig or a chicken, I tell them this:
There is but one distinction that the equine has over all other "traditional" food chain animals and that is this: The USDA maintains an offical list of acceptable "food chain" animals and the equine IS NOT on that list. My point and my argument is that we should keep it that way.

Please help us to end horse slaughter in America. Call or write your Congressmen and Senators and tell them to support anti-horse slaugher legislation, and why. Send them a link to the Animal Angels Report in the link above, and remember to support Animal Angels. A more pro-active anti-horse slaughter and cruelty group you will never find, and well deserving of your tax-deductible donations. Tell them MuleKist sent you!

Do-Gooders Doing Bad: NetPossie a "Breeding Incentives" Org.?

We all know about the good work NetPossie / Stolen Horse International does in locating stolen horses, but we see by their latest blurb they are now in the Breeding Incentive Business, just like the AQHA! They are auctioning off stud services donated to them on ebay and at "greatly reduced" prices. So here we have incentive on top of incentive to breed, not only does the money go to a good cause (NetPossie) but you get a great(?) breeding at a greatly reduced rate! Geeze, it makes ME even want to breed! How 'bout you?

Do we really need anymore breeding incentives? Couldnt they find something better to auction off, like horse tack, horse cookies, horse jewelry, greetings cards, candles, anything except for breeding. Fer crists sake, dont they know theres a horse over-population going on?

Farm Bill Gives Breeders 444 Mil inTax Breaks!

Incorporated into the recently enacted Farm Bill, the Equine Equity Act gives industrial horse owners and breeders $444 million dollars in tax breaks over the next 10 years! Who, we ask, ultimatley pays the "vig" on these lucrative tax breaks? We the tax payers of course, and also, the poor over-bred, over-used, over-raced horses as a species. Imagine if just a small portion of this money could be put into a national retirment fund for retired industry horses? There would be our answer to "who is going to take care of all these horses if the slaughter option ends?"

What is "The Congressional Horse Caucus?"

Basically, the Congressional Horse Caucus is a group of politicians "representing" the equine industry to see to it they get their way in Washington; but here is the industrys "polite" discription of what it is;

The Congressional Horse Caucus is a bipartisan group of Members of the House of Representatives formed to educate Members of Congress and their staffs about the importance of the horse industry in the economic, agricultural, sporting, gaming and recreational life of the nation.

This group of Representatives has an expressed interest in the industry and wants to support the issues important to it. The Caucus presently has 54 members and are listed below;

Bloggers note: The names IN BOLD are politicians who, while representing the (pro-slaughter) industry, have also pledged to support the HR 6598, "The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act" currently pending in Congress. This is the bill that would end horse slaughter and exportation for human consumption.
